Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Strava kudos question. ..

So when I get done riding I save my ride on Strava. Shortly thereafter I get kudos from several cyclists I know and several from cyclists from all over the world.
Why are people I have no clue who they are giving me kudos?
I'm all for the friendly pat on the back but I'm sure there are other reasons why they are doing this.
Any thoughts?

Yea, I didn't get that either. Some apps put all the riders you follow on a screen and you can Kudo all. I think that is 30%-60%. Then, some look at your rides and are saying, kudos - you did something better than you normally do. That can be based on the ride/segment (some famous pass) or who you ride with.

But is a good well known rider with a lesser known, not as fast rider - the lesser rider can pull more Kudos.
Go look at Lance's Strava .

Silver I'm a LEO. I'm okay with the kudos but I got some today from England and California. Yesterday it was Brazil, England and Florida.
I will add them to follow and see if I get invited to ride with them.

Then make your profile private and don't allow anyone to follow you or give you kudos. Problem solved. I literally have about 18 billion people in Brazil following my profile, and it hasn't been a problem. It's cool for me to see pictures and other people enjoying cycling in their own ways all around the world. If you want to keep to yourself and your small circle of friends whom you all know in real life only, maybe social media is not the best outlet.

Go look at Lance's Strava .
I follow some pros and ex-pros. Lance blows them all away. He gets on average about 3,000 kudos per ride.

Not really a matter of trust or naivete, I'm just curious about why. What are they thinking? What's the point? What did I do to deserve these followers?
I mean, I have a hard time keeping track of who's who among a lot of the folks I've purposefully followed because I enjoyed riding with them a time or two, or because they have a KOM I want, or something like that. Generally speaking, I can't imagine following complete strangers who ride strange roads, but there have been a couple of characters who've stood out that I have started following.
I think what it is is that they just take every suggestion Strava gives them in the "You Should Follow," which are seemingly quite random folks. And then they follow every random stranger who follows them because Strava suggested, and so on. Typical "big data" puffery, it seems.

If you are with one of the Strava clubs then you will get kudos from random strangers. I suspect they have a bot doing the hard work for them rather than searching you out individually. The basic idea is to accumulate as many followers as you can (and giving kudos to random people will just encourage some of those randoms to follow you). Why do you need followers? Because then some savvy clothing/bike part company will give you free stuff which you can post a picture of on Strava in return. Free advertising for the company, free stuff for the Strava player with lots of followers.

This. Its a like-for-like thing. Same thing happens on Instagram, and any other circle jerk platform.

Yep, I thinks it's probably because you belong to a few clubs with lots of members. Some folks will give you kudos just because.

You should try Zwift. Guaranteed kudos from dozens of strangers, especially if you really droped the zHamer.

Yeah, I got three times as many for some random noodling around Watopia than I ever did in real life.

What is it about Brazil? I have a lot of followers from there, too. Seems to be lots of good MTBing down there. I also enjoy the pictures.

I must admit the system is a bit odd.

Strava keeps wanting me to add followers that are 100 miles away, rather than the ones that are local, and hitting the same segments that I regularly ride. Some seem to be racers with hundreds of followers, some seem to be more ordinary riders.

It would be nice if it had a private message system. But, perhaps they worry about abuse (and server capacity).

I did have an acquaintance I met on a group ride 100 miles away who found me on Strava (and thus all the follower suggestions near her rather than near me).

As far as I know, she is the only one giving me kudos. And, I'll tick off a few kudos when she does special group rides, or gets PRs on segments. Otherwise, I tend to ignore "commutes". Likewise, she'll tick off my "fun rides".

Can I give you a kudos for that? I have been wondering why these random people from who-knows-where have started to follow me -- this seems like a plausible explanation. So, um, kudos!

They are trying to get you to let them follow you. Then they will observe your cycling habits and burglarize your house when you go out for your usual ride.

"REQUEST TO FOLLOW" feature!

I was getting lots of weird follows when I didn't use the feature. Now only my buds can see my rides.

I do belong to one small club (for a reason) and I have gotten a few kudos from riders not on my list but they are legit knowing them from the club.

Of course, the other explanation is people just like getting kudos and the best way to get them is by having a lot of followers and the best way to get followers is to give out kudos.

So I think you are really just trying to get me to follow you aren't you?

I came across a fellow a few weeks ago as he was sitting on the top of a leaderboard for a local racing clubs strava group. He's signed up for just about every single club there is (it took ages for his profile page to load with all those clubs) and had quite a few followers (something in the thousands) even though he really was a complete nobody.
