Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hour of rain and the constant wind did not appear in photos. Nor the cold temps.

Oh, on Saturday's epic 110 mile ride, one of the riders was running eTap and his RD battery died. He switched to the front and did the rest of the ride as a 1x11.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement for electronic shifting.

So...

...We're getting the puppy, pending figuring out a few minor details. I guess that means its not 100% but I'd say 95%. A lot going on right now, so we won't get her until mid-June.

Did I post the pic already? Can't remember.

Her name is Phoenix. She is half-Russian.

Counterpoint: I played with etap for the first time on Saturday on a bike in my shop's stand. A bamboo bike with oval rings, no less.

It felt really nice. Seems pretty conclusive to me.

The photos make it look not miserable. I still think that we lucked out to a certain extent - not enough rain to soak in to our rain resistant apparel, but enough to dampen the dust without softening the roads (for the most part).

Dust on the gravel typically is only bad when cars go by and cars are usually rare anyway. The wind would have kept it down too.

It does seem pretty cool. I wonder if one must be a little OCD about checking battery condition/life before rides?

I would be OCD for racing, but for rides having the front and rear take the same battery is a nice back up plan.

Speaking of racing... I did one this past weekend that I got shelled in horribly last year. It played out in a similar fashion, crosswinds with two teams (mine being one this time) going at each other.

This year I missed the break by not much and found riding in the main group easy after that other than the downwind bit where I was close to spinning out 53x11... so progress I suppose. Team mates got 1st, 3rd and 4th from the break of 4.
