Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Brand New to Sport.. advice?

I'm 23 years old and am just about to start this new hobby. I haven't bought a bike yet and i have absolutely no idea what to look for.

I used to ride BMX when i was little but haven't picked up a bike in years. Does anyone know of any good sights about learning about this sport, especially what to look for in a bike?

Also, i'm moving to North Jersey and would love to join a bicycling club up there, anyone know of any links or people by there?

Thanks, any help is much appreciated.

-Craig

First things first...
How much are you willing to spend? ^^
Don't forget to include basic accessories...

Helmet
Shoes
Pedals
Floor Pump
Repair Kit [spare tube, tire levers, patch kit, mini-pump, multi-tool]
Clothes maybe [jersey, shorts, warmers, socks... etc]
NOW..... after all that spending..
What do you have left?

Yup it does... Makes you want more and more, bikes and miles ...

find whichever bike you can. I went cheapo as I was in grad school and was given a target street bike. I rode it around the whole of last summer.. Get a helmet, shorts, etc etc... START RIDING...

well, if you don't know if you will like being a roadie, or a mtn biker, or cycling in general, don't drop a whole lot on your first bike. Check the $700 bike thread in this forum for some good advice on a bike if you are considering the road route

Isn’t that the truth.

What type of riding do you plan on doing?
Your best bet would be to go around to as many bike stores in your area as possible. Talk to the employees and find out what type of riding is going on in the area. After talking to a few, seeing the bike up close and riding them you will be able to make a better decision on your purchase. Everyone has a unique situation.

definitely join a club....and if you can get a friend to loan you a bike...even if its not a great bike...so you can do a couple rides before you get a bike...will also help you decide what bike you want...
