Back to OP topic. My neighbor had a Subaru Tribeca which had a recall. The part for the recall was not available till January of this year. For about the last half of last year he was provided with various loaner vehicles. These included a loaded Suburban and a Buick Lacrosse. He loved the Suburban, but too much money. He also fell in love with the Buick. When the Subaru was repaired, he went and traded it for a Buick. He told the dealer it was the "long test drive" with the loaner vehicle that sold him. The Lacrosse might have the trunk room the OP is seeking.

Maybe. Very close to the BMW 328d (which is Diesel) xDrive - 40mpg and like the 328d - a bit small. I ideally want 2 bikes plus 4 total passenger config and high mileage.
Passengers are wife and me and junior and/or teammate sister.
The bikes are wife and mine for 2K trek (So SoCal to CO someplace) and then maybe 1-2 on top, but junior and teammate/s normally have bikes in their trailer. Trips are normally 1k miles each way and about 500 miles at the destination. Utah I70 is posted 80mph speed limit, CO is posted 75. The speeds are pretty good and bike racks, trailers etc cost more fuel and wind noise. And in the day buddy had racks fly off the car. While I'm sure that was user error - I can't get it out of my mind. Then I forget racks are there and am parking garage challenged, I either can't use one, or forget and that is bad.
So far those used E350 Benz's @ ~ $23K look real good, but mpg is less than desired.
The BMW may work. Plan is to take a car (non BMW) in for service and see if I can use a service loaner car and find out.
I'll likely be buying pre-owned.

I drove a BMW 328d 4wd wagon this afternoon. Pretty big in back. It could do 2 bikes I think, but I did not bring them.
That was because I found the 2012 R350 I want and I didn't want buyers remorse.
It is in Portland, so flying up to look and driving down, hopefully with it this weekend.
It is big, ugly and so unique - and Diesel. I do expect better than EPA mpg. We shall see.

Buy a Lexus. Quiet, comfortable and reliable. With the driving dynamics of a good sofa.

Anyway it is a clean diesel and saving about $20K over the (new) smaller BMW wagon - and driving a big boat.
I work at home. This is for cruising with stuff...
I admit - what I said I wanted - might not be what I got. I have not purchased yet, but think it is a done deal.

Didn't realise it was a diesel. Thought the R300cdi and R320cdi were the diesels but will be the first to admit that the Mercedes model number/letter system can be somewhat confusing.
I use a Mercedes Sprinter (might be called a Dodge in the USA) van for carrying stuff and with a 14' load bay isn't short on room.
