How many miles from a pair of shoes?
My Specialized shoes are starting to separate at the back. I don't think they owe me anything. Been though a lot of rain, and 10,000 miles or so. Does that seem about right? I'll probably just keep them until they actually fall apart.

10,000 seems pretty short lived to me. My Sidis are used daily for commuting with stops every mile on average, on and off twice daily, and longer rides on the weekends, but also with many stops. That is 25000+ with only a replacement of buckles. But, they don't see much rain (This is So CA after all).

It depends on your cadence.

Seems short to me too. I've got over 35,000 miles on my 7 year old Shimano SH-R132L shoes. They are starting to show it though. I ride in all weather including winter although they are covered with neoprene covers in winter.

Maybe it depends on the model, but my S-Works shoes have been solid for over 13k miles of good and not-so-good weather conditions. Although an unfortunate crash today took a chunk out of them, so I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to use them

I probably have about 18-20,000 miles on my S-works. I have replaced the Boas a couple times, and now the carbon is starting to delaminate at the sole. Might try to get a few thousand miles more by the end of the season.

And your tolerance level.
If you have no tolerance for scuffs, even the best shoes might not last 1,000 miles. On the other hand, I'd imagine most shoes that fall apart could be repaired if one cared to do that, and if you allow for that, they could last a lifetime. But to be reasonable, a lot of shoes just aren't worth repairing. I'd say how long they last has as much to do with luck and conditions of use as anything - whether they get wrecked, repeatedly soaked, stowed next to a radiator, how much they get walked in, etc.

10,000 miles is pretty low. Depending on the rider that's only 500-600 hours, anywhere from 12-24 months. My cheap Sidi's have upwards of 5 years/30,000 miles with a ton or rain and seem to still be going strong.

My $50 Giros lasted a little less than 10,000 miles before the glue came apart. I was 70 miles into a century and was not carrying a spare pair of shoes.

My Sidi Ergo2's are over 10yrs old with over 70K miles and are still comfortable but look like !@#$.

S-Works with 30,000. Replaced BOA's twice and will probably need to replace again before the end of the year. No delamination issues for me. Been in a couple crashes & show battle scars, but I'm not going to replace until they fail.

Keep on climbing
My shoes (some Sidi model) are about 12 years old now. One of the Velcro straps occasionally undoes itself but otherwise they're fine. They're kinda scuffed up. They don't see a lot of rain, but definitely some. They probably have around 40,000 miles in them in that time.
I'm fully expecting to get another "lot" of years out them before they need replacing.

Some might, but the stuff I've used (shoes, helmet, saddle) has been good. Unfortunately, they recently changed the shape of the last/footbeds for their shoes, so they no longer fit me well, but my 5-year-old shoes are still in great shape - the cleat nuts are easily replaceable, the upper cleans up well and it's not like the carbon soles are going to lose their stiffness any time soon. At $200 for a CF sole and Boa closure, I think that their Expert shoes are a great value (if they fit, obv).

I have 3K on my current Pearl Izumi shoes and Speedplay cleats. They look almost new with little wear. Shoes will last a long time.

Up to about 70,000 miles on a set of Carnac shoes. I use them in the winter now as the tops have a tear in them but they're still very comfortable.
