How to get a unwanted drafter off your back tire? (drafting)

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If it is a public way, it is your responsibility to ride in a safe, predictable manner, and you have nothing to fear from someone drafting you. While it may be courteous to call out hazards and vocalize your intentions to someone close behind, a person taking a draft places no burdens on you that you don't already assume by riding a public way. If you don't like it, then give way; pull over and stop if you must. And if you are just annoyed by the noise made by some other rider who happens to have confidence in you, then tell HIM, not us. There's nothing WE can do about it.

Two unrelated statements. Yes, BOTH riders are supposed to ride safely ... which is why there never are accidents or collisions.

The lead rider can ride as safely as s/he wants, but the drafting rider Can be a threat and a menace.

Imagine if someone were tailgating you in your car, so close you couldn't see the trailing car's headlights. Would you be cool with that, because the rules of the road said everyone had to conduct their vehicles in a safe fashion?

The drafting rider could indeed hit the leader, no matter how careful the leader was.

Not true. I am less safe if another rider is an inch off my wheel than if another rider was 100 yards off my wheel.

The rider who posted had never seen this before and wanted some guidance form more experienced riders ... so why he was asking here, I cannot imagine.

In any case ... it seems like a troll thread.

I think it was a dick move to just start drafting me, I don't even know him and his bike was loud and annoying. I have no problems with someone I know drafting me.

Don't know why it didn't occur to you to slow down, or if he was there for two miles you had plenty of opportunity to say something to him, but you did nothing, and instead played the victim. You could have taken advantage of the situation by asking him to pull for a change too.

Come on now. He was going like 17mph. That's rare ground, even in the 33.

Starting doing your interval training...stop pedalling to coast, sprint for 30s, coast for 30s, sprint again. I can't imagine anyone would want to follow that...

A lead rider may FEEL menaced by someone taking a draft, but generally speaking, there is no risk to them unless they panic. Of course there's nothing we can do about other riders' fears except acknowledge them and not make assumptions about them. Even if there is a risk of harm to the lead bike, my point was only that someone taking a draft does not suddenly oblige the leader to act like they are in a pace line (as some suggest), or to ride any differently than they are supposed to in any event.

The rider who posted had never seen this before and wanted some guidance form more experienced riders ... so why he was asking here, I cannot imagine.

I can't imagine what kind of expertise anyone would expect. It's at best a question of etiquette, if not simply common sense and courtesy. But aside from giving way, maybe there is a "proper" way to address an unwanted (or just noisy) wheelsucker? Is there something we call our fellow riders (the ones with whom we are unacquainted) besides "hey you?"

Again, you underestimate the awesome power of this forum. We can, for example, stoke their fears.

You don't think that they're under any additional obligation to more carefully watch their line/pace, point out debris/hazards, etc? If *you* don't think that, that's on you, but I think that many would disagree. That's not to say that I think that it's a big deal to get bent out of shape about, but I do think that it's an additional obligation and I could see some people not being very comfortable accepting it.

If I drop in behind you as a complete stranger, and don't tell you I'm there... I would be a complete idiot, I would roundly deserve any consequences resulting from you not looking out for me, and I would be a selfish twit if I expect any different from you.

That's not that case here, is it? His presence was clearly announced via clanking e-bike.

I suggest caltrops, a smoke bomb and a ninja grappling hook deployed in quick succession to escape for that ****ing *****bag. Or perhaps one of those hub-mounted spinning blades as seen in Gladiator.
