Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How long are chains supposed to last? Is there a big difference in performance between an expensive chain and a less expensive chain? I thought I'd ask. I took my bike into the LBS I bought it at and he said I needed a new chain because it had stretched. Then he convinced me to buy a $70 performance competition chain because it would last longer and be "less likely" to stretch. Did he spot a sucker? Or is this "super bad ass" chain gonna prove to be worth the bucks.

Also, can you take a link out of a stretched chain and have it be road worthy again?

Buy the cheapest chain that you can, provided it's compatible with your drivetrain.

Keep it relatively clean and reasonably well lubricated.

Life? Hmm.

SRAM PC-49/59 chains are like $10 on sale and even have a removable master link. (nice benefit for cleaning the chain)

Me smelleth a pile of fertilizer. I use the DA9 chain which I can get for ~20 from Performance using a price match and the 20% coupon from the TdC (Amer Diabetes) fundraiser ride. I put a new chain on each year, regardless. Last time I checked, the prior chain (which had ~4500 mi on it) was still within spec using the Park chain checker tool.

However, I have just switched to using 2 chains, each with the Wipperman speed link. One chain is being cleaned using two jars with degreaser while the other is on the bike. Seems to work well.

Also, Performance has the teflon coated Wipperman chain on sale for $25 now. With the 20% coupon, that would be 20 (for a 50 $ chain). Not bad. Think I'm going to get 2 of those for next time. Best.

How long is a rope. You got suckered. But if your chain was really trashed, your cassette may be too. You will know if the new chain skips on it.

I change my chain every 2000 miles. You can go longer, but too long and you will wear your cassette down and the next time you change you might have to replace the cassette, too. No need to buy "boutique" chains -- I use whatever SRAM chain I can get on sale at the moment.

Here's some info on chain life:

Ah come on, Do you care about feelings? Why not let people feel good after being ripped-off Haha. Wouldn't that be the PC thing to do? Let's keep everything peachy and tell everyone that high priced boutique items really are better.

Besides now that 10s is out I don't know how I can make it through another ride with only 9 gears.

Yeah...so if any of y'all have some property you'd like to sell me... I feel like a sucker. That's the place I bought the bike. It's actually the first time this place has let me bring my bike in because they've always been "too busy" to get my bike in. I hate taking it out there because it's such a pain in the a$$ because it's so far away. Now they ripped me off essentially. Bummer. The story ends well though. The other LBS, that I like a whole lot and wish I had bought my bike from cut me a sweet deal on a new pair of shoes. I picked up a pair of Sidi Energy (the 03 model I think) for less then $100! This site shows a picture of them... https://www.primera-bournemouth.co.uk...=Clothing&ID=1 Mine are the silver/black ones. They fit me like a glove. Anyway, they list for $230 and they marked them down to $160 last year. And on top of that they were nearly half off. So I got them for $98, and he threw in a pair of coffee shop caps for my new speedplay cleats (that havent come yet). So, I like this LBS a whole lot better. Oh, and let me tell you how I got ripped off on E-Bay. I ended up paying $140 (with shipping) for Speedplay X5 pedals because I had to buy the cleats sepperately!! Yeah...this same LBS was selling them for $99 including cleats. What a dufus...never buying e-bay again!!!!!

is there any difference between the Dura-ace 10 and Ultegra 10 chains? The DA chain is like $1 more. I need a new chain soon and can't decide which one. My bike is ultegra 10 minus the crank.

How about a nice carbon fiber chain? You don't have one of those, do you?

Cheer up! Everybody here has made a mistake at one time or another. Just don't do business with that LBS again.
