Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2015 Campagnolo Record 53/36 Chainring setup

I tried to find information on the Campagnolo Record 2015 and later 4 arm crankset and whether or not I could run a 36 chainring with the 53 chainring. Nothing I could find said it could be done or that it could not be done. These newer cranks use same bolt circle for 39, 36 and 34 chainrings. So, decided to buy a 36 tooth and try it. What I found is that it will work perfectly with cassettes up to 27 teeth, no more, with the short cage rear derailleur. The front derailleur works perfectly with great shifts every time and I cannot tell the difference in rear shifting from the 39/36 setup. I really like the arrangement and I saved some money not having to buy a 52 tooth ring to go along with 36 tooth ring.

Interesting experiment. I suppose you realized but dismissed the idea of just changing the cassette to the 12-29 and keeping what I assume was the 39 front chainring you started with?
