Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Front Derailer Fit Braze/Clamp on

What does braze on mean, and how can I tell if a braze front derailer will fit on my bike?

Thanks in advance

a braze-on front derailleur fits onto a protrusion from the seattube on the frame... if your bike has a clamp attatched to the derailleur, you have to use a clamp-on. Either that or you can buy a braze-on derailleur and a "problem solvers adapter". One word of warning, though. If you're using a campy braze-on front derailleur, there's a shim thingy that comes on the screw and you'll have to find some way to get it off in order to use it with a Shimano adapter (which is what I'm using).

Thanks for the info. I've been bit by the DA bug, looking for 9spd stuff on Ebay

Edit: Talked myself out of upgrading. Screw that, 105/Ultegra is crisp enough when it's properly tuned up.

My Fuji frame is a clamp-on. I bought it used and he gave me a Shimano clamp/braze adapter.. I couldn't use the bolt that came with the campy derailleur because of the shim that comes on it (normally necessary for correct spacing on actual braze-on frames) so I had to ditch the bolt and find a new one. Shimano stuff isn't such an issue.
