Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Number 3 - head on shot of group. I suggest setting this up as a poll.

I don't understand the poll, but I like the third one from the top. That seems the most action oriented if you get my drift.

Right in the middle of the pack, everyones pushing hard and the slight blurs give you the sense of speed.

I don't think any of these are podium material. Nevertheless, perhaps photo #1 should be submitted since it is at least a bit different from the other three - which appear more mainline and we see enough of these. Use a little quicker shutter speed next week.

Thats Frankie Andreu in #3

the poll reads top to bottom, same as the photos. the poll options are the names of the photos, they have to have a name in the contest.

these are 1500 pixels across, the the resolution is much better than the hosting site allows, anyone know a better one?

Yup...

I vote 3 as it looks kinda cool and a serious bump for 1,4 and 2 which almost looks fake..
3 would have been great with a faster shutter speed.

It really looks photoshopped int the first two.

I would vote the third one though.

Try faster film.

When I was taking pictures of some group rides for my photography class I was using 1000speed film. But it gives them kind of a frozen look, not blurred.

If your going for the blurred look, then 400 is fine.

"Rippin" Ronnie Sink, he live in Rochester Hills Michigan. The "Detroit" Jersey in that photo is over 80 years old, and held together with saftey pins, it has a very rich history.

You need slower shutter speed and pan to follow the riders, so the background and wheels blur.

yeah, it was my first time ever shooting at a track, so I just basically took pictures of everything.

They look a lot grainier and pixelized on that hosting site, when i open them on my PC they look a thousand times better. No doctoring, I am looking through the negatives right now.

If I click on the image after it opens in the new window, I get the full size view, but only if i do it before I enlarge the new window, wtf.

That third shot is pretty nifty. I like how you can see the expressions on their faces, and how the focus is on the guy in orange. Gives a sense of speed to the guys in front and the tail of the peloton.

I belong to a camera club and I reguarly enter photographic competitions as well as doing weddings proffesionally.

Here's my site https://www.anthonyglynn.com

On the initial glance I liked No. 3 but after having a closer look I prefer No. 2. The grass to the right of the frame in No. 3 is just too distracting and it doesn't work for me. Your eye is drawn away from the main subject.

In No.2 you have the classic rule of thirds going for you and your eye tends to circulate around the photo. It has a certain quirkiness to it I like.

Regards, AnthonyG

Most people like No. 3 and it does have initial impact. Which photo will be judged best depends on how it's being judged. If it's an internet poll by visitors to the site go with No.3. If a photographic expert is judging it they won't rate it at all. Go with No. 2.
