Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My understanding is that most of Lance Armstrong's income comes from US-based sponsors (Trek, Suburu, etc.), who pay him somewhere in the 8 figures per year. His salary from the team pretty small compared to that. Support riders will make a lot less, especially the guys that do not race in the big races. The Discovery team uses less than half of the team to the Tour de France.
