Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I need to do more short rides!

I went on a (relatively) short ride last night after dinner, 16 miles out and back. The first 8 were into a stiff headwind, but knowing I was only going a short distance, I pushed fairly hard. On the way back, of course, I had the tailwind, and was flying along pretty good. Average speed for the ride was 18.6, about 3 mph better than my average for long rides. I think I tend to keep too much in reserve on the long rides trying to pace myself. How do you guys know when you're pacing yourselves appropriately for the length of a ride?

When I get off the bike at the end of the ride and can still walk.

But seriously, about 3 hours of tempo riding is all I have in me. Any longer than that, I slow down.

I just got back from a 58 mile ride. I averaged over 18. I've gone on 20 mile rides where i didn't average that high. Averages don't really mean a lot. Usually the higher they are, the more favorable your conditions were.

I know I've done it when I can finish. If I feel good at the end I didnt go hard enough. If I'm quesy, delerious, dehydrated, food sounds yucky, legs are quivering and eyesight is affected, I know I went just right.

If I haven't puked yet but feel like I could I know I'm getting close to my max for that ride.

If I could think of getting back on my bike after the last hill back to my house I haven't ridden hard enough, that being said, sometimes I just sit and cruise for an hour or two.

I'm surprised nobody has said this yet, but I use a heart rate monitor and know what I can sustain from past rides. I personally find that my fastest average speeds are over 40 miles long and I am guessing its because I spend most of the shorter rides warming up. I really need about 45 minutes to get into the zone.

I just go as hard and fast as I can when training and suffer until i'm through. (generally about 25 miles on weekday rides unless I stupidly do a morning and evening like yesterday)

If I'm not worn out at the end of the ride, I do interval sprints over the last three miles until I feel like dying. Then I do one more.

It really depends on your specific goals. Since your average was 3 mph faster than usual, bump up your cruising speed 1 mph on your next long ride and see how you feel.

I enjoy biking. I want to CONTINUE to enjoy biking. It's fun to go hard, but not to the point of
feeling physically ill. I'd rather finish thinking I could have done a little more.

As someone mentioned, it depends on your goals.
