Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Riding in the rain?

I've started to ride again after a 2 year break (knee problem). I really don't have much time to ride except for those days that I don't stay until 9pm in the office.

I try to get out at least once during the work week. And that's what I've been doing these past 3 weeks. However, luck has not been on my side.

For the past two weeks we had massive thunderstorms and it would just pour for 30 minutes before it tapers off to a light drizzle.

Now, the floor is completely wet and there is some flooding going on (we're not used to the sudden downpours). When I ride, my butt is all wet & dirty. By the time I get to my 3rd mile, I feel my butt completely soaked (yes, the nice padding on my shorts are soaked as well).

I don't have a problem with my shoes being soaked, but I hate to ride with a wet butt. I know for touring bikes and for Mtn bikes, you can add this plastic thing to the back (it goes right above the rear tires) to prevent water from spinning on you from your rear wheels. But can this be done with a road bike?

Any suggestions?

Right now, my saddle bag and all its contents (credit card, cash, phone, spare tire, tire iron, patch kit) is completely wet. Hopefully it'll be dry for tonight's ride.

Thanks.

There are several different types of fenders you can get. If your bike does not have fender eyelets, you can still get a rear fender that clips on to the seatpost. Or you can get SKS RaceBlade fenders that clip on to the seat stays.

If I didn't ride in the rain, I probably wouldn't ride at all. Get some fenders for your road
bike, put your wallet in a zip lock bag, put all your stuff in two plastic sacks one inside the other, in your saddlebag. The beauty of fenders on a road bike, and mine are full, is that it increases the dork factor thereby lessening the thief factor.

SKS Raceblade fenders are the way to go. They're usually about $50. I'd also second the recommendation of putting your stuff in a ziploc in the saddle bag, even with fenders on.

Whatever you do fender-wise, your feet will still get wet. I have two pairs of shoes so it's not too much of an issue for me if I need to ride the next day, and some members here talk of success with drying their shoes on a rack in the clothes dryer (on low heat).

$50 is more than what I'm willing to spend for a fender. I was hoping to get something cheaper. I don't plan to ride much in the rain. But I do want a little protection if and when I do ride when it's raining.

This is the Raceblade.

If you have fender eyelets there are other fenders available for around $25-30, but brake clearance may be an issue. There are also rear only fenders that mount using a quick-release mech and another cheaper one (not sure if it would fit on a roadie). Not as good (they're a fair way from the tire and not full coverage) and you'll still get a heap of spray off the front tire.

there's also the planet bike hardcore fenders that can go from $20-35... that covers both front and back wheels... i've installed only the rear and have been using it for less than a week... no complaints so far although i am ironically praying for rain so that i can test these out...

SKS Race Blade
Planet Bike Freddy Fenders but there may be fit issues as otehrs have pointed out.
SKS X Blade clip on (seat post) fender

Keep in mind that if you place an order for $75 or more (maybe you need some other stuff too?) there is a coupon code in the affiliates area for 20% off and if you are a TP member you get another 10% back in credit for future purchases.
