Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

liveSTRONG Laptop

I know this has nothing to do with road bikes, However lance is in this.
I thought it'll be nice to support this foundation if your going to buy a laptop in the future.
The specs are very good, not for a gamer but for school and business related use, this is a very good laptop.

Hmmm... I don't see the problem. The name is being added to promote awareness of cancer survivorship... a good cause. The notebook itself is actually fairly priced compared to other notebooks of its class. There's no name-markup happening here. $50 for every notebook sale goes to the LAF. Gee, it sure is moronic that people (Lance Armstrong, LAF, HP, AMD) are trying to generate income for a charitable cause.

You're right. I didn't realize it was a livestrong laptop, I thought it was an LA laptop. Very cool that $50 goes to LAF. I'm the moron. Thanks for straightening me out.

On another note, HP has always been a company that has promoted cycling. I've been to several HP campuses and they do things like supply a large fleet of shared bikes to their employees to travel between buildings. There's also plenty of bike facilities as well. And they sponser a pretty vibrant employee cycling club.

HP is a very good company IMO.
They are making next to nothing on these laptops.

Perhaps a Livestrong iPod.....

Anyone actually purchase one of these?

Oh and, on the topic of cancer support electronics, you can get a Pink Ribbon Roomba.

Geez. Bit of a hefty device, ain't it? Personally, I'd rather go with a Panasonic that's just under 3lbs than the HP (which I've found to have questionable products at times).

I know, my Dell LS from 1998 weights 3lbs.

But for the price, it's a pretty good deal, weight included....keep in mind my Dell C610 weighs about 9lbs and costed nearly a grand....given it's got 6 hours of battery life...but still 9lbs....

Well, Panasonic makes the best laptops IMHO. I have not been very impressed with any of the laptops out on the market today save the truly ruggedised ones like the Toughbooks. But then again I tend to beat up my hardware. Several years ago at a previous employer, I used to have the predecessor to the Toughbook 29, a Panasonic CF-25mkII (aka Toughbook 25... before they started the Toughbook name-branding) and that thing was a tank. Of course it was fairly heavy too. Because we need a laptop that ran some flavour of unix and I was fairly knowledgable on that subject, I was asked to spec a laptop for our group which did a lot of travelling. So before ordering them, I asked Panasonic for a demo unit. They sent me one in the mail. As soon as I got it, I asked them if I could do some durability testing. I told them I intended to take it out to the parking lot and run it over with my Jeep. They said, "go ahead". So I loaded BSD/OS onto it, fired up an mp3 player so that it began reading from the drive. Then I promptly headed out my office to the parking lot. On the way out, I rolled it down a few steps in the staircase. Once outside, I put it on the ground in the parking lot behind the wheels of my Jeep and with the music still playing, backed over it. Then I stuck the Jeep in drive and ran over it again. I repeated this three times. The case was slightly marred and scratched (although it was a demo unit and came to me with its own share of scratches) but nothing broke and everything performed flawlessly. I had vmstat running continuously in another window to monitor disk activity too and saw no hiccups, no ATA retries or anything like that. During the course of owning the CF-25, I managed to drop it several times from desk height onto hard concrete, spilled orange juice all over the keyboard which I then washed off in a sink by sticking it under a faucet and used it as a height booster to stand on when I needed a few extra inches to grab something off the top shelf.

The biggest downside to the Toughbook 29 is that it's expensive. A fully configured unit will run you around $5,000. For a cheaper but slightly less rugged alternative, I would recommend the Panasonic T2 or W2. They're also much lighter and thinner (under 3lbs. and approx 1" thick) but they are still fully magnesium encased in a water-resistant chassis with shock-resistant components. And they're more competatively priced at around $2,000. If I had to buy a new laptop today, it would probably be a Panasonic Y2.
  • Intel 1.40GHz LV738 Centrino
  • Integrated 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN
  • 14.1" 1400x1050 outdoor-readable TFT Active Matrix Color LCD
  • Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
  • 3.4 lbs lightweight ultra-thin design - 1.3"/1.8" (H) x 12.2" (W) x 9.6" (D)
  • Full magnesium alloy case
  • Shock-mounted hard drive
  • Secure Digital (SD) card slot

OMG.. you're the first person I've met, other than my uncle, who agrees with me on Panasonics. I have a CF48 (nice little weight-lifting toughbook) and want to get a Y2 next year. (or whatever it will be called).
