Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tire Gauge/Pump Advice.

I was wondering what brand/model of tire guage and floor pump would you recommend for high-pressure tires(120psi)?

I've got 2 gauges that do presta valves;a Zefal and a Topeak. The Zefal is easy to use,but it reads about 6-8psi high(I've checked it with other gauges). The Topeak makes me want to pull my hair out. The on/off button is located where it's real easy to hit while fiddling with the gauge, and I thought I was going to rip the stem out of my tube trying to get it off. I just cannot believe how hard this thing is to get on/off the valve. What do you all like for an easy-to-use,accurate gauge? I commute and live on my bikes,so I'm not too worried about price on something this important.

I'd also like advice on a floor pump. I've got a Rav-X and it's a real bear to use once the pressure gets over 100psi. Anyone know of a pump that does 120 without having to use all my body weight?

TIA.

As far as tire guages go, maybe you got a bum Zefal, or maybe I got lucky? I have two and they agree with each other and the gauge on my Park floor pump. I had a planet bike tire gauge and threw it out in frustration. I have no problems with my Park floor pump but the chuck is kind of large...a person with small hands wouldn't like it, I think.

Forget the floor pump, get yourself a $10 air compressor at canadian tire. Floor pumps are overrated.

I have the BlackBurn TP-5 and it has a high-pressure button on it so pumping a tire in excess of 140PSI's is a breeze...plus the gauge on it is about dead on....

"The Dual Stage/ Dual Action intervals allow you to easily switch from high volume to high pressure by a depressing the Stage Selector located on the base."

I believe the newest variation of this pump is: Blackburn AirTower 5 Floor Pump

I think a gauge is a waste of time on a road bike. By the time you've checked the pressure you've lost 2 pounds or more. And you know you'll need to add air everytime you ride anyway. Just get a good floor pump with a good built-in gauge and use it with every ride or once a day whichever comes first.

Buy a Silca floor pump and you'll never need another pump.

I second the SKS Rennkompressor. I bought an early SKS in 1985 in Germany and it still works flawlessly. I used to run 200psi tubulars and it pumped them up without any trouble.

Thanks for the replies. I just picked up a Performance Hurricane pump from the LBS. I had $50 in Team coupons,so it was free. Very easy to use,and the gauge is reasonably accurate. As for a presta gauge;sod it. I just picked up a presta-to-schrader adapter and will just use my digital gauge.
