Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Computer Problem?

So, I didnt have to work til later this morning, so I got up at about 645 and planned on going for a ride of about 20 or so miles. My usual morning rides are about 10, but with the extra time, why not. So, I get going and forget to reset my computer (Cateye Micro Wireless). I reset it and didnt think much of it. Then, almost a mile or so down the road, I wanted to get my average speed. All I noticed were zeroes. Nothing more than zeroes. Then, after the waiting period of no activity, my computer just shut down. The clock still worked, but I am assuming that is because of the battery in the computer itself, not the wireless transmitter.

So, all I could think is that the battery in the wireless transmitter has gone bad. Which leads me to my question. Shouldnt a battery like that last more than say 98 miles? Thats all that was on that battery.

Thanks,

Was it the battery that came with the computer? They usually don't last long at all.

Was it showing your current speed as you were riding? I am thinking that either the sensor or the magnet on your wheel got bumped and it is no longer sensing the magnet as it goes around. I have had a similar problem with the cadence on my computer when the magnet on the crank gets bumped a little and the sensor does not pick it up.

I'd agree.

Check the position of the magnet and sensor before jumping to conclusions about the battery. Magnet and sensor can both get bumped out of position reasonably easily...

I stopped and checked everything. Nothing seemed to be out of place. Also, nothing was showing while I was riding...except for 000000000.

Be careful when storing the bike. Remember to position the magnet away from the sensor. The sensor is essentially a reed-relay switch and if the magnet is positioned at the sensor when the bike is stored, the sensor is constantly in the "on" positioning and sucking down the battery by transmitting.
