Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Where's the consideration for women!?

So right now I have a 2004 Trek 1500 WSD and it's a nice bike to ride around with the team or cruising around campus but I want to get an upgrade since now that I finally have a summer job at the LBS.

Looking through the 2005 catalogue, I realized that Trek didn't make a 2300 WSD for 2005...only in men’s...what's up with that? I know that the closest thing is a 2100 but heck, I'd love to get a bike will full Ultegra components.

Does anyone know if they will make a 2300 WSD for the upcoming 2006 year?

Are you set on a Trek or have you looked into other brands that aren't WSD but may have similar geometry?

Well the Trek 1500 WSD as sold in the Australian, UK and probably some other world markets IS full Ultegra 9s groupset. Even the crank. The bike Americans call a 1500 we have as a 1400.

If your going to work in a LBS maybe you will find the contacts to swing something.

Regards, Anthony

I'm pretty much set on the Trek since the LBS carries only Trek and Specialized bikes. The Specialized bikes have a different geometry to their frames that I'm not used to so I'd rather stick with the same size of bike but just an upgrade in the frame and components.

Have you thought about asking your LBS how much it would cost for them to rebuild the 2100WSD up with the same component spec as a 2300-class bike? A 2300WSD, if one existed, would most likely have the same class of frame as a 2100WSD since the 2300 has the same frame as the 2100.

Cannondale has a Women specific R1000. Full ultegra minus the crank and it has Ksyrium Elite wheels.

what's wsd anyway? narrower bars and shorter cranks, sometimes a wider saddle and/or 650c wheels

if you're working at an lbs you should be able to swap components to make any (smaller) men's bike work

good luck

Frame geometries are also appropriately altered if the manufacturer knows what they're doing.

Sometimes you can and sometimes you can't. Really a WSD type frame is just another way to design the geometry and spec the components. Some men fit better on WSD frames than on traditional frames. Many women fit fine on a "men's frame" and some women fit better on "men's frames" than WSD frames. That happened to a friend of mine who tried out the Treks. She felt uncomfortable on the WSD frames but felt fine on the traditional frames. She did however complain about brake-reach so a component swap, some shims and handlebar change would have fixed that. In the end however, she did eventually buy a WSD-type frame... a Specialized Dolce because it fit her better than the Allez and she liked the ride better than the Treks.

Well if she's a Trek dealer, then by default isn't she also a Lemond dealer and a Klein dealer as well (not the mention Gary Fisher, but a 29er won't quite do as a road bike replacement)?

Lemond has some women's bikes worth checking out ... https://www.lemondbikes.com/

WSD frames usually have a shorter top tube

along with shorter reach levers, different saddles, narrower bars

ohh, okay

I didn't know they were different frames, thought they were just painted/&/spec'd differently

(I return to my former policy of not commenting on things I have no clue about, even if it is saturday night and I am bored at work ;-)

Uh, the people who are working in the industry, like say - for an LBS, are the ones who are supposed to have the inside information.

This bike is set up with a shorter distance from seat to bars, so it will have the same effect as WSD.

There's plenty of euro manufacturers with high-end WSD designs, here's a 53cm Orbea Dama Race:

Although it would be fun to put a Gary Fisher sticker on the downtube of a Madone SSL and surprise Gary with it in the Trek-Fisher booth at the next trade show he attends...

Obrea also has the Mitis Dama, which is a bit cheaper than that high-zoot bike up there ^^

I don't think this is true. My FBS sells LeMonds and Fishers but isn't allowed to sell Treks or Kleins due to geographic diversification strategies on the part of Trek.

That might explain something I was wondering about a Vancouver LBS (Bicycle Sports Pacific). They have a whole bunch of Fisher mountain bikes for sale, $400 to $4500, but no Trek road bikes. Instead, they carry Giant OCR/TCR and Cannondale R-series road bikes. No LeMonds either.

how about a Pilot 5.0 WSD? $2339 MSRP with Ultegra/DA mix? Looks like a good deal to me!
