Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Replacement bolts for Speedplay Zero cleats.

A few days ago towards the end of a long ride I lost 3 of the 4 bolts of my Zero cleats. The last bolt wasn't enough to keep the cleat on and I ended up riding almost 6 miles home with my left shoe strapped to the bike.

Can anyone tell me the diameter and thread size I need for replacement bolts? It should be the same for all shoes. I would rather not guess and ruin the threads on my shoes.

I would call Speedplay. When you do replace them, be sure to use blue locktite.

The screws come from Speedplay with thread locking compound already on them. Make sure you securely tighten them down- but not too tight, or they won't work right.

Local dealers that sell Speedplay should have a "tackle box" of spare Speedplay parts, everything from screws to bearings.

On my looks, instead of the flat head screws, or allen bolts that come with some shoes, I use 8mm hex bolts. You can tighten them with a 3-way Y wrench, found in any bike shop, or cyclists kit. Or any socket set. Just for shets and giggles we took an old shoe and tightened the bolt so much it started to bend the washers and pull the plate out of the shoe sole.

You don;t have to worry about stripping the fasteners, or them ever coming out.

You have 4mmX11mm "fastening screws" these have the conical recessed head. Also the black "5mmX 8.5mm mounting screws"; or depending on application 5mmX11.5mm mounting screws in silver. These are the low profile pan head type affair...having fun yet? Sorry! I have stopped for a number of people over the last year struggling with a loose cleat and missing screw. It is a pit.
