Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Back-to-Back Centuries

I just got in from my second of two centuries this weekend.

Yesterday I rode with the local club and we flew (well, it was fast for me) through the first 80 kms at 26 km/h. I headed off on my own to finish, and slowed the pace a bit, but it still ended up being my fastest century this year. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great ... as usual this year ... and it rained just about the whole time. When I got in I was completely and utterly soaked from head to foot.

So ... hot shower, warm clothes, good night's sleep ...

And I was on the road for the second one this morning. The ride didn't start the way I had in mind ... I got away 30 minutes late, it was pouring rain (again), and then about 8 kms up the road, I flatted. I spent the next 20 minutes sitting on the side of the road changing my wet, muddy, and greasy tire, in the rain, while a steady stream of cars when by splashing me with water from their wake. I almost turned around and went home right there and then. However, I continued on, and the rain stopped after a couple hours and it got relatively nice out (overcast, occasional drizzle, occasional bit of sunshine and about 18 degrees).

The second one was quite a bit slower than the first, and felt tough for some reason, but kept at it and made it around.

The only thing is ... my quads are killing me now!!!

Jeez... two centuries in two days... I've never even DONE a century! I think I probably could, but my willpower is a bit on the low side, so I've not even bothered to attempt one. I usually get to about 25 miles and start planning a route home (40 miles is my highest this year).

Is that a metric century or a normall 100 mile century? Either way its a good accomplishment heck I would be lucky to survive one century in 2 days right now let alone 2 in 2 days!

I've done back-to-back centuries a couple times, but I can't even imagine doing it in less then ideal weather conditions. Doing them in the rain like you takes some serious dedication. I'll probably be attempting it again sometime in September (once it's pretty much guaranteed to be cooler weather here in New England).

Nice work!

I intended to go back-to-back this weekend, but a late start on Sunday and the blasted hot and humid weather here put an end to that bid, so I settled for 103 on Saturday and a hilly 70 on Sunday. We tried to catch some of the RAAM riders at the Laurelville time station on Sunday, but our timing was poor -- we just missed two of the teams!

Those were both full imperial centuries ... 100 miles.

All we've had is rain here. Just about every ride I've been on this year has been somewhere between damp and utterly soaked. I'm getting used to it.

Are you referring to my flat?

-- I had a phone ... but didn't need it. (In fact, I'm not sure WHY I would need a phone in a situation where I had a flat tire ... a phone's not going to help me any!)

-- The road was quite well known to me, it was my usual training route and I was within site of home ... but I didn't need to return there.

-- And not only that ... but I know perfectly well how to change a flat (I can't count the number I've changed), I had all the necessary equipment with me, and actually considering the weather conditions, that process went very, very well.

Machka, you're a monster!

You know why that second century was slower, though.... you were tired... you know it.. you know it. Two centuries in the rain? Not a long break between the first tiring one and the second one?

Even Machka needs a break every now and then. I hope you're taking one! It's well deserved!

Well, I had hoped I wouldn't be that tired out!! I'm gearing up for the Gold Rush Randonnee (1200K) in a couple weeks so I should be able to do stuff like that. However, neither ride was really bad, and both ended up being roughly where I need to be for speed at this point in my training ... especially the first one which was kind of a blast travelling along that fast!!

I don't think it was normal... sometimes, you just have those days where you just are off your game. It's fatigue, and even the best of us get fatigued from time to time.

I doubt you'll have any problems with your 1200k... as if!
