Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Santa Ana River Ride Report...

Since I asked about the trail I decided to write a few words on my ride...

Total miles - 80.51, Total Time - 4 hours, 26 minutes, Average Speed - 18.1 MPH, Stops - 1

Beautiful ride, was supose to be an aerobic, muscular endurance ride... sort of, well until I meet some guys from our local Rec club and we rode back, then it was 22 MPH pacelines, with 50 miles already on the clock... fun!

Well I did something today that I have never though I would do this season, ride a metric century non stop. My goal this summer was to ride a 40 mile ride non stop, today I did nearly 65 miles before my break (well sort of). At mile 35 approximatly I went to downtown hunnignton and meet a few guys who I would ride back with, well I got there and they were ready to go, so 2 minutes later we were back on the bike... yah!

Well the ride from Greenriver was a pain, it was a pain following the bike trail at times, but the ride was nice. The route is relativly flat, some rollers, but not bad, a nasty headwind going out though. I did not eat enough though, (only 1 powerbar), but drank about 100 oz of liquid. About mile 70 I was starting to bonk and the last 10 miles were painful.

Overall the ride was fun!

How far into Corona/Riverside does the trail go? Does it end at the damn? I ride it almost every morning from Fountain Valley to PCH and occasionally I'll go the other direction until a couple of miles past the Stadium. I've been thinking of taking it towards Corona and then doing some climbs in Anaheim hills and heading back. You can almost always count on the headwind if you're coming towards the beach, it gets worse around 2:00pm, make for a nice return trip

Thanks for the ride report. Sounds kind of like my ride to Pepperdine this weekend. Headwinds were strong going N/NW, but a great Sunday nevertheless. Glad you met one of your goals, and then some

Yeah, bonking during a long ride, with a good distance to go sucks. All in good fun, though!

I've done this starting from Weir Canyon Road in Yorba Linda. There is a popular mall with a coffee shop that seems to be a starting/parking area for many cyclists. From there to the beach and back is a 50 mile round trip. If you're coming from the beach, you can ride up to Weir Canyon Road and then climb upwards into the Anaheim Hills. This is an excellent trail if you want to reach a certain intensity and maintain it for miles. It is uninterrupted paved trail all the way to the beach.

In the other direction, I've been as far as Featherly Park. That used to be the end of the paved trail but it continues up river from there. I've not explored it beyond the park.

Great job on what sounds like a great ride. I love it when a cyclist describes a near bonk as a wonderful ride. You've got to come off of that emergency $20 in your jersey pocket for some more food, though.

That thing is the "bike freeway" it's great! The way it cuts across the grid of the streets at a diagonal makes it great for getting a lot of places. Man I miss that thing.

I started the ride at the Jack in the Box up on Green River, from there it is a 70 mile ride round trip to Hunnington Beach. I ended up exploring the newport area so it ended up being 80 miles instead of 70. My rule of thumb is that for rides of less than 60 I carry one or two powerbars and gel, but I think I need to modify that so I have more avalable. For those of you that have riden the river trail there are not very many places to actually get food on it so extra percautions are needed...

Bonking is never fun, but I had a good time, next time I will shoot a few pics...

Interesting thing, the comp said I burned 5500 calories today, I wonder why I almost bonked?! I ate so much food at dinner, I guess it makes up for it, but for an endurance ride my legs are sure tired...

You have to be able to access the energy sources. You store some in the liver and some in the muscles, the rest goes into long-term storage. You also retrieve some from long-term storage when the work rate is not too high. A key item is the muscle storage. You have to increase the storage through two thing: adding to it during the ride (did not do enough of that), and training. The good news is that the bonking pushes the system of increase its stores ;>)

Also note that it is Hun[t]ington (not two "nn"s). I used to ride (from Pomona) down the path from the 71 transition before it was even completely through. As I recall, doing that transition was no fun when the Santa Ana winds blow. I did take 71/path to Newport Beach one Thanksgiving with a tail wind (it was FAST ~24 maybe). Usually I would cut back up Brea Canyon for a good, rolling loop. I tried to hit 2:00 for the 50 miles that I would time, but was always a little short (2:02?).

OC_Roadie asked how far the trail goes: The part that follows the river pretty much stops at Green River, however you can take Green River into Corona and then on to Norco, Riverside, or even Ellsinore. The Riverside Bicycle Club has an annual ride called "Smog to Surf" that goes From Riverside to Huntington and back for a full century. I think you can still sign up for the August 27th ride.

True, as a member of the Riverside Bicycle Club I will be helping out at that ride. There is also the prelude to Smog to Surf that I am going to ride. Theoretically you could start in Redlands, ride all the way to Riverside, take Victorria to Magnolia then to Green River to the beach, although that would probably be a 120 mile+ ride.

I'm planning to ride to the beach this weekend and was wondering if there is a good beach route down by huntington to newport. Something where it rides along the coast. Thanks.

I think I saw some of you Riverside guys on the River Trail last Saturday morning around 8:00am, right around the Wood Bridge in Costa Mesa. I think I saw a group of about 6 of you and then a couple of stragglers a couple of minutes behind.

Hey Squeegy-
Any suggestions of a route to take if I exit the trail at Weir Canyon? I am searching for new climbs, and have never really ridden in Anaheim Hills. Thanks...Pat

PCH will take you from HB to NB. Farily wide open road (cant remember if it has a bike lane). There are plenty of cyclist doing it on the weekend. Bad part is that road is full of cars on the weekends.

PCH has a nice wide shoulder and/or a bike lane until you reach MacArthur (Corona Del Mar area). The bike lane starts back up after about a mile and then disappears again in Laguna Beach. Laguna Beach sucks on the weekends, the lane is narrow and there's lots of traffic that's more interested in looking for Starbucks than watching for cyclists.

I ride Laguna Beach portion of PCH almost everyday.. and the cars are not too bad... I always watch the parked car mirrors and if I need to, I take up the entire road so a car doesn't try to pass. You have to watch out for the buses and trucks....

Also watch out for the indentations on the asphalt, some of them are really deep....

I've found some decent areas to stop if you need emergency food or something.

W on Hamilton in HB will take you to a grocery store (Stater Bros, I think) and some gas stations.

Just W of the trail on Garden Grove Blvd (just before you go into the chain-link "tunnel" by the golf course), there's a little strip mall with a coffee shop and a Blimpie (sandwiches). Also, if you go N on The City Drive, you're at The Block. Lots of yummy stuff there.

If you go E on Lincoln in Anaheim/Orange, you'll hit a the wonderful Orange Tree Deli. There's also a small convenience store there. Go N on Kramer after that, and you're back on the trail (this is where the trail curves E).

If yoo go N (or NW) on Weir Canyon/YL Blvd in Yorba Linda/Anaheim Hills, there's an Albertsons and some restaurants about a block away.

Ok, thanks for the advice. Do any of you guys ever ride from OC to the south bay? I heard there is a good ride up the coast for that.

OC Roadie, get off the trail at Imperial Hwy and go toward Anahiem Hills. Stay on Imperial and you will hit a nasty mother of a hill after a mile or so...I think it ends up connecting to Champan and you can take that to Santiago.
