Over-doing it?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Over-doing it?

Would I be over-doing it if I rode everyday 25-30 miles? This morning before work, I rode 30 miles in about an hour and 40 minutes. I usually start at 7am and I have to be at work by 10am. I just started riding a road bike this past Tuesday. I was riding a mtn bike with slicks about 18 miles with average speed of 17 mph every night. I'm getting a Flight Deck installed on the R700 on Tuesday. Also, is it necessary to workout with weights? I have all the dumbbells from 2 lbs to 50 lbs. My goal is to race someday.

I doubt the dumbells will do much for your leg power (except squats). In fact, most of the pros kind of look like praying maintis's or T rex's with great big legs and little tiny upper bodies. A lot of great riders put in those kind of miles and then some, the key is how it is done. Look into some training techniques.

You're over doing it if you do the same workout every day. Try mixing it up: some easy days, some hard days, some sprint intervals, some hills, some long days.

1.5-2hrs/day of moderate aerobic exercise.......thats barely a tax on the body, for many its probably more of an issue of the time sacrifice out of their lives rather than a physical limit

I was 35yrs old before I even came close to understanding how much work the body can handle, and I ve probably only scratched the surface LOL, so far based on what many others post here and elsewhere, most others dont know how much they can do physically either. Average advice I see in most training forums if heeded would mean most bike messengers could only work 2 or 3 days/wk if that without "overtraining", "burning out", or by some accounts keeling over and dying.
