Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ladies, seriously, cover your ears.

I'm thinking I need to wear a jock under my bike shorts because the middle seam rising from the front padded area is chafing Junior. Someone told me I shouldn't be wearing underwear so I've been going commando. But I can't go on long rides without stopping a couple of times to move the muscle away from the middle and off to either side. Does this happen to you or does yours stay put? Do you wear skivvies? Does anyone wear a jock as a base layer? Am I the only one with a migrating member? Doesn't matter which shorts I wear , my PI Ultrasensor or Performance Elite bib shorts, either one rubs me raw. Any advice you can give will be appreciated by Junior.

I switched to Garneau Ergo-Tex and haven't had the problem since. I still am a big Pearl Izumi fan, but I feel your pain.

I bought a pair of Pearl Izumi tri knics and they had a central seam which drove me nuts the one and only time I rode the things. Useless!

Never ridden in one that has a seem up the middle. That seems odd. I tend to point to the right, though so I dunno...

Commuting and touring I wear briefs under bike shorts under shorts (or rain pants). All synthetic. Rare chaffing issues, aleviated using a chamois cream (paceline brand chamois butt'r). I commute daily, and have done a couple month-long tours. I would not however, recommend wearing briefs under cycle shorts for fast paced long rides.

Fitness rides, events&such I wear bike shorts commando. Long rides/brevets (12 hours plus), I'll wear two pair of bike shorts-commando. Whenever I cycle commando, I use the chamois cream. A tube lasts me a long time (4 months+).

Could be that your shorts are a touch too large. My PI shorts all seem to run a touch bigger than ones from other makers-so my privates tended to move about. I've now relegated these as my outer layer sets for when I double layer cycle shorts.

If you are going to try wearing briefs under your shorts for fast/long rides look into Andiamo briefs. I've read about them as solving some problems for folks-but have no first hand experience with them. REI carries them (as do others-most probably including a good LBS), they are expensive.

Look, this question gets put up here from time to time...

Just do the "Petacchi" actually all the pro's do it... Pull everything up front against your belly, that way you dont sit on anything.... It may look funny at the coffe shop, but....

rearrange the furniture, as it were.

You don't want cotton or elastic anything in your cheap hotel.

When you put the bibs on (good choice-I'm also a bib fan ), position "junior" pointing straight up toward your chest.
It also sounds like it's time for a new saddle.
I have a Selle Italia Flite Gelflow saddle on my road bike and a Terry Fly on my commuter. Notice that each as a cut out? Helps a lot.

I thought this was a problem for me last year until I bought the right seat and is a non issue now but I am on the small side.

I'm able to just wrap jr. around my thigh and keeps things out of the way, guess that won't work for you smaller guys.
Seriously, a cutout seat may help or find a seamless short. Also Bike Nashbar sells a breathable underwear has no seams better than a cotton tighty whitey or boxers might try those for keeping the guys inline.

To each their own- but I've owned saddles with cutouts and gel spots, and the area around the cutout or gel eventually feels like a knike blade sticking into my ass- due to the contrast of the edge area.

I don't think you see too many TdF racers using either- I don't know about ultra-endurance riders, but I don't think it is without reason.

I'd definitely get a pair of shorts without the center seam. If you're looking for lower priced but decent shorts, try out Voler (www.velowear.com). Their seams are flat stitched, and a minimal covering of chamois creme of some kind (assos or butt'r) will make for a nice comfortable short for any kind of riding. Also, like someone else suggested, once you pull on your bibs, pull everything up towards the chest as far as is comfortable--keeps you from sitting on anything and from squishing anything when you tuck down into the drops as well. Another thing you can try is to tilt the nose of the saddle down a tiny bit--this will take pressure of the general area where that seam is located. I have noticed a bit of pressure underneath/behind the boys lately as I've been riding more again, and yesterday after my ride I tilted the nose down just a touch, and today was a much more comfortable ride.

10 years ago when I first got back into cycling I wore a jock strap under my shorts. Rubbed through the skin where the stap went under my but!. I had chafe marks in several locations. I was a bloody mess by the time I stopped. No underwear for me.

I suggest you ride commando. And use chamois cream to keep from chaffing. You will still hurt some at the end of the ride but much less then riding with any under garment. Also dump the shorts any seam up the middle sounds crazy. Your LBS has diff products for helping with chaffing. If after all thatand your still dying. Then look into getting a new saddle.

While I don't recall ever having problems up front (as opposed to underneath, where on occasion I do...) I agree with kickingback's suggestions. Wearing smth. else under your shorts/bibs will probably end up causing a new set of problems. Invest in a new pair of bibs...

Sounds like the shorts have to go. I just got back into biking. I bought a pair of Pearl Izumi Microsensor short on the advise from the LBS. I recently bought a pair of Voler Team Shorts on sale with their Cantara pad. Much improved comfort. Smoother ride less shock to my sit bones and better feeling of conetion to the saddle. Way cool.
So having heard rave reviews and wanting too improve on an already good thing I decided to try a pair of Assos FI Mille shorts. The pad is even better but the material that extends beyound the pad in front is a fleece like material which is chaffing on the main man. Voler uses a soft white material in this area and you never notice it is there. Just as it shoud be.
Has anyone else had this problem with the Assos Fi Mille?? Is there a solution? I really like the Assos pad alot and can understand why, void the problem I am having, people rave about the comfort. HELP!!

Had the same exact problem. Occured also underneath.

I had the Garneau ergo sensor. It wasn't the seam that was getting to me, it was the edge of the chamois that was chafing. Found shorts with a different chamois.

Also, try something with flat locked seams.

Hmm I have a some Peral Izumis that my LBS suggested and Overall I'm not really happy with them. I should see if my LBS has some Voler Team shorts and see if that rectifies the problem I'm having.

I went to the Assos FI Mille (and consequently the FI.13-S2) *because* of the chamois... no problems with the shorts whatsoever. Try lubing up the fleece-stuff with chamois-creme. I loved Craft, but the damn bibs kept separating at the seams after 70 miles. Pearl sucked, I couldn't stand their shorts or shammys.

I do have one pair of Pearl Izumi Microsensor shorts, and before I got the Assos I had the same problem with Junior. What worked for me was wrapping junior in some pretaping underwrap ... weird, I know... but it worked.
