Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm just beginning to get into the mechanics of cycling, and with all this discussion/loyalty to either Shimano or Campy, I was wondering if you guys could post pics of the shifters and components of Campy to give me something to compare with my Trek 1200 (everything Shimano).

This is the best pic i have of a Campy Record shifter but it isn't a very good one. However, it seems to resemble Shimano's shift levers quite a lot.

I would appreciate the pics. Also, if anyone has pics of Sora shifters, i've heard those are different than the rest of the Shimano lineup, I would love to see those posted. thanks.

Here's a couple where you can see the thumb tabs a bit. With Shimano, the whole brake lever can move. With Campy, the brake lever is fixed. Only the tab behind the lever, and the thumb tab (on the inside of the brake hood) moves.

Sorry, I'll just use the website.

thanks.

Sorry, thread hijack here.

Martin, where did you get that stem mount for your Polar? I bought a sigma BC1600 just for that reason, but I am in the market for a Polar or an HAC4 and want to mount it on the stem.

Are you looking to get rid of your BC1600? If so, I may be interested in taking it off your hands.

I'll let you know. If I'm able to get the polar/HAC I'll get back to you.

I do have a Cateye CC-CD300DW that I have never installed, if you're interested. I've never used it, never even been mounted. I did take it out of the box, but I didn't like the look of it. Got it as a gift.

Just curious - what didn't you like re looks? Do you have a replacement that shows cadence, speed, distance, and time at the same time?

I considered the same computer but decided that it was too much computer for me. Sure, it's nice to have split window that will display everything at once, but it wasn't worth the $200 CDN price. I'm usually running cadence and either time or distance on my Astrale and it isn't much trouble to switch back and forth.

Here's another angle of some Ergo's, mounted a bit lower on the bars.

It wasn't the display I didn't like, it was the fact that the mount for the unit itself extended past the bars. That is the only way to mount it. I thought you could mount it on your bars if you wanted to, but that is not available. There is nothing wrong with the mount, I just didn't like the look of it . (OCP? maybe )

I just prefer a sleeker, less conspicuous look. I went through great lengths to keep my bike as stealth as possible. I even keep my CO2 and spare in my second water bottle to not clutter my bike with a seat bag (although for anything 50k+ I do use one as I need the water!). I wanted a stem mount and there was no way to do it. Everyone's eye has their own version of what looks pleasing to them, the forward mount just doesn't do it for me. I've attached a pic of both (One from Julich's Soloist and Patriot, I used one of your pics, hope that's OK)

FWIW, I think the features and the multi-display are great. Also, I had an Astrale 8 for years and I had no issues with the quality of Cateye.

I ended up getting a Sigma Sport BC-1600 as it gave me the stem mount, the cadence and all the other essentials for a cheap price while I debate spending the cash for a Polar or a HAC4. It gives me what I need for now .

Now I also know (thanks to Martin and his gizmo) that I can mount the Polar or HAC on the stem too!!

For the OP, these are my Chorus Ergolevers from the front.

The hoods are a bit smaller and thinner than Shimano (I have 105's on my old/rain bike) and fit my hands much better. YMMV.

I switched from STI to Ergopower not to long ago and really like the Campy levers. It took a little getting used to. The front der. can be trimmed because the campy lever has a buch of small movements unlike the shimano. Also on the rear Der. you can drop down several gears at a time by pushing the thumb lever a little farther. The shifting is also nicer when in the drops. The campy dose require a little more pressure to shift and has a louder clunk when shifting down in the back.
