Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Indefinite backorder - what would you do?

Got the call yesterday from the LBS that my F2C won't be delivered this summer. At best I'll get an 06 in October (order was placed mid-March) which effectively means no riding this year as I live in the Rochester, NY area.

Here's my question: What should I do?
1. Keep waiting because it's a good deal (assuming spec's don't change).
2. Try to work the LBS to get a Felt 35 or 55 (with some upgrades at LBS cost - don't know if this is possible as 35's and 55's might be back ordered in my size as well...)
3. Jump to another manufacturer.

I'm really tired of waiting but my budget is set at $2600 ($2399 + tax = 2590). I've started to think about option 2 but am not sure if it's ride quality, bling factor or what, but I really want all CF. I saw a Madone 5.2 yesterday in clear coat (option 3 recon) and was surprised (I didn't realize it was a Trek as it didn't have a horrible looking paint job) but the best the shop could do was $2699 which I know is pretty good but it's also over $2900 when you factor in tax...

HELP

What about picking up an older steel bike on the used market (low $$) just to hold you over? Then, this fall you get your F2C and you have a steel bike to put on the trainer all winter long. Rochester winters being what they are. It likely means not being competive when you race, but ...

I second OPC's suggestion, pick up something used & cheap to get through the summer, then put into service as a trainer/beater/backup once the F2C arrives.

My shop has lots of Felts, including (I believe) some F2c's. If you want to consider buying from out of state maybe someone here can locate one for you at their lbs.

What you save in taxes will help toward shipping and tune-up fee at your lbs, plus spiffing the finder a pair of Speedplay Ti Zeros

The 105 equipped version for $1999? The don't think I've seen the Ultegra model listed anywhere under 3K.

I'm riding an Allez A1 right now so I've got my beater bike Last year I was doing about centuries per month and the aluminum beat me up a bit (which is why I think I was originally leaning to the CF...). That's one of the reasons I'm not sure about the AL/CF bikes - how big of a difference does the CF seat stays really make?

My Allez has Ultegra SPD - SL's and I couldn't wait so I bought another pair knowing I'd put them on something I'm in need of a 52cm frame (with the AC wheelset please). PM me if you know the whereabouts of this bike - I'd save over $100 (shipping versus NYS sales tax).
