Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Greetings all! I've been lurking and researching for the past few days and spent the morning and afternoon riding bikes. As I said in the welcome forum, I'm 5'10" and over 260 pounds and am primarily looking for a bike to ride to help me loose weight. I remember how much I loved to ride in high school so thought this might be a good way to go about it.

Long story short, I settled on the Trek 1000c and just got back from my first ride... Of course that ride was a bit disheartening after reading the distances ya'll do... but I'll take my 6 miles through hilly terrain and be happy... I know I'm tired and sweating like a pig so hopefully I worked hard

My thoughts on the bike... my first road bike I might add. I'd recommend the 1000c to all of us who are new to road biking. The positioning is so different from touring or mountain biking it's a great idea to go with a bike that has an adjustable stem and a more comfortable seat (with a shock I might add). The Tektro brake levers are also a great idea for those of us new to the road. It's going to take some time for me to become comfortable in the drops and it's nice to be able to break while holding the flat portion of the bar. Also, if you decide the road bike setup isn't for you the LBS told me you can fit some of the smaller hybrid tires on the bike.

As I said, I only did 6 miles, but so far am pretty dang happy. I'll try to update this thread after I get a few more miles on it... Hopefully I'll be cranking out more miles in the days to come, I just need to work up to it. I have a tendencay to go all out on something and burn myself out quick... I'm trying to follow some advice I read on the board and am riding within my limits... especially to start. All I can say is I have no idea how you guys can do 100 miles in a day

Thanks for all the great advice and input on this board... Also, if anyone is ever in the South Bend area Outpost Sports has some great guys workin' for 'em... Ask for Josh.

Welcome to the forum.

The distance will come eventually. Did you have a sore butt? Most important thing is to have fun. That keeps you going. Dont' push too far, unless that's what you like.

The butt isn't too sore... but the 1000c has a wider and more cushioned seat... My butt felt a lot worse on the Trek 1000 and the LaMond I test rode

I went back to cycling about three years ago after a 35 year break. My first ride to the local coffee shop took 47 minutes. The same ride yesterday morning took 11.33 minutes.

I tell myself this every time I'm tempted to denegrate my performance.

We are exercising. That's what matters most. That it is fun too - what a bonus!

Toefuzz is actually my son's nickname... He was born 2 months premature and from day 1 always seemed to have a bunch of fuzz between his toes, even before he wore socks... The nickname just stuck

Thanks for the encouragement all! I'm going to make a concentrated effort to get out there and ride everyday. I think I'll start a log to try and chart my rides... Might be interesting to see the difference from month to month and year to year.

Anyone else here in the Grand Rapids area... I'm actually in Cedar Springs, the Red Flannel Capital of the world
