Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I ride a 2001 Lemond Poprad shown here:

I bought it in Feb from a cyclocrosser but I'm currently riding it as a commuter. However, I'd like to get into a little bit more road cycling at longer distances than my 5 mile commute. However, I feel that my current setup, while sufficient to get me to/from places could use some upgrading.

Here are the specs:

Kooka cranks (110 BCD) with 46t / 34t Vuelta SE chainrings
Shimano Sora groupo with bar end shifters, smallest gear on the cassette is 13t.
Eggbeater pedals
Selle Italia Ti saddle (not shown)
Bontrager bars with Syntace stem (Aheadset threadless that needs replacing)
Some unknown wheetset

Right now I'm thinking of upgrading to a new front / rear derailleur setup (shimano 105? Campy Centaur?). I definitely need some larger chainrings (gonna go up to 50t, maybe 52t) since I'm spinning out the tallest gear at around 29 MPH, and I rarely, rarely use the smaller chainring. Oh and I like the bar end shifters.

Basically looking for "bang for the buck" recommendations here, even if it means buying used components somewhere. So what would you guys upgrade?

Picture was taken when the seat was a little loose and had moved from its "standard" location. Plus, I have a different seat on there now. But thanks for the bump.

the most cost eff. thing to do is get a new cog set with an 11 and 12 tooth cogs. If your running an 8 speed look for an 11-28 if you got a 9 speed (in friction mode or reg) then 11-23 cog set. That should take care of the spin out thing.

Do that 1st then think about a new crank set. IMHO. From there move on to a new wheel set. enjoy.
