What size chainrings did Eddy Merckx use on his Colnago?
I read somewhere that the riders of yesteryear were pounding huge gears. Anybody know what The Cannibal's racing crankset /cassette specs were?

Probably a 52 42 but he could have had a 54 42. The old freewheels were often set up with an 11 tooth cog.

you're probably right, but I didn't think that 11 cogs were around until the LeMond era... I started cycling in about 1976-77, and the smallest rear cog I remember was a 12? 13? 54 or 52 big rings, 44 or 42 in front, 13-21/23 in back.. 5 speed freewheel set.

same as a cassette cog but the freewheel was actually integrated into the cassette instead of the hub
