Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

.......but unfortunately, it was done on a rental bike......and on top of that, it wasn't a road bike.......it was done on a bike with 26x2.0" knobbie tires.

It was done with a Specialized Rockhopper (front suspension). We were descending a 9% hill. Although we don't have a computer that was functioning at the time of the descend, I KNOW it was in the 40+ MPH range. The fastest I've gone on my road bike was in the mid 30s (just did 34MPH 3 days ago on my metric century ride).

But this was a 3.5 mile descend at a 9% grade. I decided to tuck in and get in a real aero position and I was flying (compared to my buddies that were still sitting upright). I know I had to reach at least the mid 40s. My buddy's computer's battery decided to crap out on us on this portion of the ride.

But man, what an adrenaline rush!!!!! While I was riding down, all I kept thinking was "Damn, I wished I had my road bike and a working computer!"

For those interested in the Mtn biking part (and for those in the Jim Thorpe, PA area), here's the full story https://www.bikeforums.net/mountain-biking/124392-first-time-mtn-biking-roadie-what-experience.html

My son and I went on a nice hilly ride the other night. Unfortunately even with decent lights neither of us were comfortable go very fast on the dark, windy roads. my computer recorded 22% max uphill grade, and -27% downhill, with a max speed of 39.6. I assure you it was under strong braking, I just didn't dare go any faster not being able to see the road any better than I could. Jason clocked a max of 38.4 I believe.

Vetta V100A. It's a little pricey, but you can recall grades, both up and down, average and max cadance, temperatures, etc.. I haven't really played with all of the features, but I have checked the altitude readings for consistancy and it seems to be pretty dead-on.
