Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Seeking advice on new bike purchase.

I'm seeking advice on a new bike purchase. Here is my situation.

I've been putting away ~400 a month towards a new bike purchase. Now, I could keep this up indefinately until I could afford a Felt F1C or something like that. I mean, it would take like a year, but what are the gains between a bike like that and a more affordable F55? There is a 3000 difference in MSRP.

I'm new the road but have been mtb for years. I'm certainly in no shape to do any races yet, although I wouldn't mind after a bit of training, but do I really need a F1C to race? I don't think so, but like I said, I could eventually get one.

At what average price point do I move past entry level to a good mid level bike, and at what point do I go from good bike to being obscenely awesome? I don't really want an entry level bike because I'm sure I would upgrade anyway and I like nice things. But, at the same time, I don't want to be a total *****. Maybe a 5000 dollar bike is a bit much to start on.

Of the shimano components (which seem to be the most common that I've seen), how are the different products rated? I see dura-ace and ultegra (sp?) on the $1500+ bikes. Which one is better?

If I were to spend around 2000 on a road bike, what kinds of components should I be looking for to know I'm getting a good deal?

Some edumacation shore wud be nace boss..

Thanks.

Well, just personal opinion here Scub, but if I were you I'd probably start out finding a decent entry level road bike...good steel frame, and 105 groupo. If you put 8 or 10 thousand miles on it in the next two or three years and you get the "road bike" bug, you can look to a really "great" frame and groupo. You might even be able to find a decent used bike that will let you prove your desire....check some local clubs, there is usually a couple guys wanting to sell 'cause they have their eye on a "super" bike.

IMHO, to the average good rider here or in most clubs, the "ride" makes NO difference (within reason"). Show me the third best rider in a club and he will be third best on a new Madone 10 or a six year old Pinarello 8!

Good luck, you will like riding the road...it's more "sociable" than MTBing.
