Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am 16 and am new to road biking, i have ridden mt. bikes and bmx all my life and fixed them all my life so i am not new to the mechanics. i test rode my friends shwinn (sorry if spelled wrong) and i loved it so i headed over to the lbs and tried out a bike that actually fit! it was the Jamis Ventura sport and it was perfect so i have decided to buy, i need help on the accessories and i have no riding clothing, i have about 100$ for accessories and 2 free services at the shop plus 10% off anything other than a bike for a year so what should i buy and if you got any tips that would help.

Looks like a decent place to start to me. You need a helmet and shorts at least. A jersey is nice to have for the pockets and the material that wicks moisture away, but you can get sports shorts of the same materials for less than most jerseys. A frame pump, spare tube, and tire levers to go in an under-seat wedge bag will get you started, and a couple of water bottle cages and water bottles will round out the list if "I need it" items fairly well. A cycle computer to help you track your progress is helpful, and it won't be long before you are going to want some decent clipless pedals and shoes, but you can get by without them for a little while. Some people use mirrors (I like a helmet mount myself) and some don't, it's a preference thing but worth considering if you will be riding on the road with traffic often.

$100 huh?
$10 cool max tee shirt, umn...
$5 salvation army shorts, then get tape and an unused sponge from the kitchen and tape it (rough side down) to the crotch area,
$5 duct tape helmet: shave your head first, then wrap the entire roll all over your skull, then using scisiors carefully cut vents into the tape,
$5 replacement tube
$10 co2 for pump and cartridge or hand pump
$5 x 2= $10 for two water bottle cages
Free water bottles... just go to where cyclist congregate and take the water bottles from unattended bikes.
$20 cycling shoes... get something with a hard sole... i would save up for clipless
$16 cycling computer (cheapest one at performance/on sale right now https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=4110)
$20 floor pump (cheapest one and on sale at performance https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=4360)

Total $96... see that was easy!

You don't 'need' shorts. I've gone on 60+ mile rides, and I've never worn bike shorts in my life....

With your $100 I'd start working down this list until you run out of money. $100 probably won't get you everything but should be enough to get you out the door.
  1. Helmet
  2. Frame Pump and Pressure Gauge OR Floor Pump w/ gauge and mini frame pump
  3. Small seatback wedge
  4. spare inner tube
  5. Tire Irons
  6. Tube Patch Kit
  7. Bike Shorts
  8. Bike Shoes

I guess you can ride in your underwear but I would check local and state laws first.

Good job!! I bet if you took up swiming you wouldn't buy swim shorts either, you would still be doing laps in your jeans. I'm so proud of you!

Not to sound nieve but whats "clippless"? if you mean the skinny pedals that take special shoes, i tired them on my mt. bike and it was a hassle, so are these easier?

They used to use clips to hold your feet to the pedals but now most people use cleats that click into the pedals which are called clipless. Clipless pedals are the ideal and if you are going to be putting some serious miles on your bike you should definately invest in getting a good pair. The cheapest is probably spd but I would look for something with a big platform. They have cheap look pedals on sale all the time. You also need shoes to attach the cleats to obviously. Peformance bikee has cheap store brand shoes which are look compatible.

I wasn't a big believer in wearing the proper attire. A week or so ago I went out and did a 2 1/2 hour ride in the rain. It was about 40+ miles I believe according to Map Quest. When I came back I had 4 places that had rashed to the point of bleeding. Now I wear proper attire and thankfully I have been able to ride without waiting for them to heal.

No don't tell him about the horrible rashes you can get! I want the dummy who posted up above to do some bleeding in his jeans.
