Going to Iowa State for grad school; any good riding in Ames?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Going to Iowa State for grad school; any good riding in Ames?

Im going to be starting grad school in August at Iowa State University. Anybody from Ames out there? How is the riding? Will i have to make my own trails out of the road system there? Id be interested in finding some cyclists out that way. Cheers!

Central Iowa has several excellent trails that are south of Ames and you can read about them at www.iowabikes.com. My favorites are the Racoon River trail, Chichaqua Valley trail and the Neal Smith trail. There are also several low density roads north and east that make good loops. Ames also has 40 miles of trails within the city limits some of which are in parks but are probably best simply as a way to get around town. Steve

Lots of good info there. I used to live in Ames, but I wasn't a cyclist at the time. I knew folks who were, and they liked the area.
