Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

During the 03-04 NHL playoffs(one of the best in recent years), bowling got better ratings than playoff games. American viewers are amazing.

I really don't mind ESPN...In the dining hall at college you either have the choice of sitting at one end of the cafe and watching MTV or sitting at the other end and watching ESPN on the big screen. Personally, MTV has become bias and only plays rap and punk/pop music now and completly have lost their rock roots. With that said, I rather watch some sports while I eat.

YOUR interest in something is directly related to how meaningfull it is to you. It's obvious why ESPN is making the right choice loading up their schedule with "eating contests" when this is the fatest country in the world.

Another example, POKER on TV, used to bore me silly, until I started playing. Now I enjoy it, I watch a player bluff then stare at the guy he just raised against, I watch a guy bet with a strong hand and look off in the distance, it all makes sense now.

Cycling on TV is the same way. I watch the riders climbing up a mountain and I can relate (granted I have to imagine but none the less) to the superhuman effort they are putting out.

Another good example is NASCAR, its so popular because us rural, southern, folk relate to it. Their driving Chevys, I'm driving Chevy. The cars are plastered with products that are a part of our lives. Hell, the guy driving could be my brother in law.

Yeah, that appears to be the majority of the programs that air on MTV nowadays. TRL (Total Request Live) now has become anything but music videos. It has come to the point where they will play maybe 45 seconds of a song. The rest of the day is filled with reality shows that brainwash our preteen/teenage population with the image of beautifual women/sandy beaches/drama/love and heartbreak.

Haha, very true! I actually saw some of the spaghetti eating last night when I was out at an italian restaurant, very meaningful. It inspired me to finish my lasagna

How can we combine these two Pro Eating and Pro Cycling? We might have a winner.

My girlfriend was watching some dumb reality show (not sure what it was called) where they did just that. They had the contestants eat a big meal, ride for a while, eat another big meal, ride some more, and on and on. It got to the point where they were puking up their meals.

The contestants were riding entry level Bianchis, which was kind of strange.

Maybe I'm dreaming, but I think they were competing to send a loved one to some kind of NASCAR thing. Some of the crap you see on TV these days....

it just amazes me how much coverage ESPN spends on the eating contest. You know how rude it is to watch someone else eat? I wonder how their table manners are in a 5 star restaurant.

They also had arm wrestling this weekend. Fox sometimes has dart throwing ... boy, we are really reaching here

MLS soccer comes on Saturdays on ESPN2 I think, as for European Soccer, only the UEFA cup comes on.

Yeah, but I'd love to at least see recaps and news of some of the major European clubs as well. Also, the recent Gold Cup games came and went and it would've been nice to see the US title game.

Real Madrid, AC Milan, Manchester United, Arsenal. Would be nice to see these teams. I know VoomHD has full season coverage of Real in HD, sigh....

ESPN might suck....but how about the "supposed" magazine "Sporting News"? I got the latest issue yesterday (free subscription through freebizmag) and not one mention of Lance's seventh TdF win....zip, nada, zilch. That magazine is such a POS that it usually goes right from the mailbox to the recycle bin, but I opened this issue to see if they had anything on the Tour in it.

How about a kind of pentathlon with poker, eating, billards, bowling(or bass fishing) finishing with a bike race?

More quality soccer any day!

Fox Sports Soccer Channel shows nothing but. Mostly European but also MLS and action from Japan and Asia. Comcast Digital has it usually in the low 400 channels.

I've said it for a while now, but I think ESPN is fast becoming for sports what MTV is for music. All sizzle and no steak. Too many talking heads and ancillary shows and too few games. Such is television.

... for that matter, what do they consider sports? One thing Fox Sports covers that ESPN doesn't is Professional Dart throwing.

Well, considering that the IOC is taking baseball out of the Olympics and leaving in trampoline jumping, the term "sports" seems to be more and more relative and arbitrary.
