Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Emergency Personnel look for ICE in your cell phones

A campaign encouraging people to enter an emergency contact number in their
mobile phone's memory under the heading "ICE" (for "In Case of Emergency"),
has rapidly spread throughout the world as a particular consequence of last
week's terrorist attacks in London. Originally established as a nation-wide
campaign in the UK, ICE allows paramedics or police to be able to contact a
designated relative / next-of-kin in an emergency situation.

The idea is the brainchild of East Anglian Ambulance Service paramedic Bob
Brotchie and was launched in May this year. Bob, 41, who has been a
paramedic for 13 years, said: "I was reflecting on some of the calls I've
attended at the roadside where I had to look through the mobile phone
contacts struggling for information on a shocked or injured person.

Almost everyone carries a mobile phone now, and with ICE we'd know immediately who
to contact and what number to ring. The person may even know of their
medical history."

By adopting the ICE advice, your mobile will help the rescue services
quickly contact a friend or relative - which could be vital in a life or
death situation. It only takes a few seconds to do, and it could easily help
save your life.

Why not put ICE in your phone now?

Simply select a new contact in your phone book, enter the word 'ICE' and the
number of the person you wish to be contacted. For more than one
contact
name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do, and please pass this
on.......it may save a life.

ride safe,

I got that email, turned to my cell, and entered the information immediately. I will do an ICE 2, 3, and 4 though, just in case...

Actually this was covered on our Local News this morning.

They suggested a more discriptive naming convention such as... "ICE wife lisa" or something like that..so the Emergency worker would have an idea what/who to expect when they made the call

Shouldn't the paramedic be busy saving my ass instead of calling people on my cellphone...?

Maybe we also need some sort of emergency tag for the bike that goes beneath the top tube or under the saddle.

I highly doubt you will find many EMTs responding to an accident ALONE!!! Think of it this way...if you are on a group ride and something goes horribly wrong...at least your fellow cyclists will know to look for ICE in your cell.

Also a lot of medication can't be given unless prior medical history is known e.g. allergies etc.

I can see how this could work if it became a wide-spread thing.

I always carry identification, emergency contact info and medical insurance card when I go out biking (no matter the distance). I keep my cellphone in the same zipbloc bag, so if during a crash my phone gets ruined, the Medics can still read the info. Naming my contacts ICE seems kind of cold

Cool. I was just given a cell phone, so I'll have to do that. I asked last year sometime about emergency contact info, and people put it on some bracelets and stuff that the EMTs know to look for. Can't remember any of the links and never did order any of it...

But I've got to ask - should this be in general cycling? I'd think especially commuters could benefit from this, since they're on the road with cars a lot, and probably have lots of accidents...

The special contact in a cell phone is a really good idea, but I always figured they would call my 'home' contact.

I also carry one of these IDs on my ankle:

I'm a paramedic...at least we can take your ph to the hospital and do it/have hospital do it there. This is not a bad idea. But yes, we'll save your ass first.

Many cyclists carry metal dog tags printed with their name, emergency info, drug alergies, blood type, medical insurance info, etc. You can get these at pet stores or military surplus stores for about $5 each. Wear it around your neck, around your wrist, tied to your shoe laces, or wherever.
