Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

MS-150 pics

These were from last weekend. We had a great time, and it was nice meeting Grasschopper and his dad. The ride was, as usual, well organized and well supported.

Here are a few.

The lovely Jess.

Me. I look like I need to lay off the donuts, but I swear it's just the jersey.

Nice view!

Lots of open road.

More pics here

94 miles on day 1 (we rode back to the house from the end of the ride) and 60-ish on day 2 (we hooked up with the ride in progress from the house). Temp was perfect, and no rain!

I highly recommend this ride for anyone in the PA area.

Looks like a real good time. Nice backroads and scenery. Did the weather hold up?

The weather was mid 80's and sunny the first day, and same temp and cloudy the second day. Perfect riding weather for Jess.

It was Jess's longest ride in a day, and her highest mileage for a weekend. Also, her highest average speed for a ride. She was quite happy.

Looks like some good country roads right there!

And I have that same jersey! I love the lizards and I'm always getting, "SOBE!" shouts, hehe!

Where does Mary (mary right?) live (area not address)? My dad and I did 82 mi on day 1 and 78 mi on day 2, also riding to and from the Nittany Lion Inn. The day 2 ride alone was at leat 71 miles. Anyway yea it was nice to meet you guys and the weather simply couldn't have been better IMO. See you needed to get a photo of you next to me that way you would look thin.

Where are the other riders in your pics? How many total participated? Did you guys leave everyone in the dust?? LOL. Sounds like fun, BTW. It just seems like a lonely 150 miles if it's just the two of you and the road.

Nah he and Jess rode in a small group on Sun...I didn't really see them on Sat. There were a little over 300 riders. Once you got started the fast ones took off and then there is sort of this middle bunch (pretty spread out) and then the really slow ones brought up the way back. I finished Sun in 4:28 ride time...about 5 hours total time and spent about 30 min at the finish after which I headed back. 30-40 min later on my way home (by car) I crossed the ride route and much to my horror (seriously) there were several lone riders coming through that area...they had well over an hour to go if I had to guess and this was over an hour after I finished....and I was like between rider 30-40 to finish (heard riders finished as much as an hour before me).

Edit: he and Jess were some where not too far behind me at the finish and we rode together for a while (30min to an hour maybe?) during the middle of the ride.

Yep, it's Mary, and they live right off of 550, just west of Stormstown. Last year her and I hammered both days out (I was 10 lbs lighter then, and I had by decent bike) very quickly, but this year we took it a lot easier because Jess is still working on her average speed.

As you probably noticed, I don't paceline very well if I'm in the front. I need practice at that, but up until this year, 95% of my riding was by myself.

Hi, guys -

Which MS150 was this? Not the Gettysburg ride, is it?

Also...the Covered Bridge ride in Lancaster County is coming up...August 21, a metric century...anyone interested? Would be cool to meet a few PA folks...

It was the Keystone Country ride. Altoona to State College and back.

The Covered Bridges ride sounds cool. I'll have to check out schedule.

cydewaze,

Thanks for posting the pictures! I did the Keystone ride in '03, but live too far away (St Louis area) to do it annually. Glad you had good weather for your ride. Nice to see pictures of "home."

FWIW I am doing the coverd bridge metric. There are a bunch of beginners from my work that are doing it so I am SURE I would welcome the sight of some real cyclists. I almost feel sorry for these guys...the one guy just got his bike out for the first time this year and started riding...I asked if they were doing one of the shorter loops and they said "nope we are riding the whole 62 miles" I was like Good for them though.

cydewaze - the only problem I saw with your pack riding is that when it was your turn to pull you ramped up the pace by about 5 MPH. The key is to maintain the pace not push it up...unless your goal is to drop riders then..... I struggled with this a bit too as I dropped my father a number of times thinking he could hold pace on ascents but I guess I over estimated his strength as a rider...back in the spring he was smoking me but I guess I got a bit stronger since then.

It's tough for me to judge pace when I'm on the front and speedo-less. My stupid sensor is loose and is constantly slipping away from the magnet, and I look down to see a blank reading. I need to fix that so I can get an idea of how fast the group is going, because as soon as I'm in front, I feel like I'm crawling and holding everyone up.

Hopefully Jess and I will be doing that covered bridges ride, and hopefully I'll have MY DAMN FRAME by then so I don't have to ride the Scat Box (my new name for it).

I'm thinking about doing the MS150 in Mississippi, from Clinton (within spitting distance north of Jackson) to Vicksburg on the first day, and then back to Clinton on the second day. It's October 1-2, 2005. I was wondering how much mileage and at what avg. speed you were doing before you did the MS ride? Right now I'm in the process of ramping up the mileage, but I can comfortably do 30 or so at about 17mph. Also, around here it's hilly, in Mississippi it's a bit flatter, and the weather will be cooler (not sure if that REALLY matters or not, but it couldn't hurt) Just trying to figure out if that's a reasonable goal, any thoughts?

Cool looks like we have a little BF group forming for the CBM. Maybe we should start another thread with a roll call for it.

You know I'm in, Grasschopper - already registered, and planning to do the full route. I was born and raised in Lancaster County; really looking forward to the ride!

Start that thread...who knows who'll jump in? PM if you'd like to try to coordinate a BF meeting spot...

Sounds like a plan to me. I for one have no idea how or where to register for this thing.

For those asking if we did the ride alone, click the more pics here link and you can see we had plenty of other people.
