Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Polar S150 or SI Pro 9?

I'm looking to get a HRM. I already have a cateye astrale 8 which works fine for me as a cyclocomputer, so all i'm really looking for is a HRM...one that doesn't need to have any cyclocomputer options (speed, cadence, distance, etc.). However, i came across the Polar S150 and it is both a HRM and a computer...for only $80 at performance it seems like a deal.

I also came across the Sports Instruments Pro 9 which seems to fit my needs exactly, being only a HRM with many options and features. I found it for $76 at trisports.com (but i'm sure i could find both cheaper on ebay).

I kinda just wanted a true HRM (no computer), but the S150's price has made me reconsider. I figure since all i'm looking for is a HRM, i'd like to keep the price under $100.

I would love to hear comments from those of you who have used one or both of these HRMs to see how reliable (i've heard problems around power lines, etc.) and valid both are. These are just the 2 that my research has left me with, so if you have a better suggestion, let me know.

(also, is my persuit of a "true" HRM, no computer, a good decision? Should i just get a cad200 or something like it? I like my Astrale 8, so i don't really see any need to, but i figured i'd ask.)

(this will be the last time i bump this post, i promise...i just would like some opinions...thanks)

Even if you don't have any experience with either of these 2 HRMs, I would like to know if...
Getting a HRM is the best way to pace yourself during a training ride

I feel like i push too hard on the climbs and then have little left at the top and on the descent. My thinking is that a HRM would allow me to keep my HR inside a target zone and thus keep my training at a consistent level. I've started reading Joe Friel's Training Bible and what little i've read so far seems to poing me toward this conclusion. Am i correct in my logic?

I had the S150 & sold it on ebay cause I found the S710 on ebay for a great price. I didn't have any problems with the S150, & it kind of grew on me when I sent my ebay purchase off for a new battery after only having it for 2 weeks. Little did I know that the battery they put in is now easily available. On both Polar models I've had, there is not way to replace the battery in the chest strap without breaking it. Might be something to consider, as I think the SI models have replaceable batteries in both strap & monitor.

While I liked the extra functions of the S150 (it can't do cadence), IMO, my cheap cateye handles the cycling functions much better.

I was also looking at the Pro 9, but didn't see that cheap a price when I purchased. Maybe I'll have to ebay my 710 & go for the Pro 9.

Dang you, now you've got me looking again.

Not really. Unless the hill is long, there will be a delay between your heart rate change and effort increase. Also daily changes to your heart rate is affected by many things.

The only true indicator of pacing would be to get a power meter. which is massively expensive. But hrms have their uses as well.

I also like the Cateye Astrale 8 better for cycling functions, if for no other reason than the cadence.

I just ordered a Sports Instruments Pro 9 from LivingInComfort.com for $85 incl. shipping. Best price I found. Trisports was now $99. Though there haven't been many there, a Pro 9 just went up on ebay.
