Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am 5'7.5 and have a 31 inseam. I recently purchased a 52 tarmac, which I got for racing and doing rides 60 miles or less. The TT is 53.7 and fits pretty well. Occasionally my neck will hurt, but that is just because I haven't worked out the saddle height yet.

I'm 5'7" and just had to cut back from a size 52cm cannondale (53.5 TT) to a 50cm (52.5 TT). My inseam is 33 inches, and that's probably the reason I needed the change.

I mostly ride with quick groups, sometimes pretty aggressive sprint rides and larger groups. Sometimes I dabble in races, too...

I'm 5'7.5" and ride a 54cm Tarmac SL (2007). It has a 54.8 top tube, the relatively short 130mm head tube so I can still get sufficient saddle-to-bar drop, and I use a 110mm stem.

FWIW, on my last bike, an '03 Fuji Team, I had more bar drop, used a no-setback post and loved it. Definitely don't need it for this bike, though, it's set up a bit less aggressively.

I'm 5'7.5" with a 30-31" inseam and am riding a sloping 51". A local LBS tried to put me on a classic 57"! I think a 53" would have been better.

As someone in the 5'7" - 5'9" range, wouldn't you be interested to see what others ride? A new thread would not have as much "past data" (which will never be outdated). Is there a reason for you suggesting a new thread that I'm not seeing?

I'm assuming that means you have a long legs & super short reach and you need the smaller 50cm frame to shorten the TT? If that's the case, does that mean you'll have a lot more seatpost showing? And if you do, does that mean the bars are going to be a lot lower than the saddle?

RudeSiggy, I'm sorry...but the head tube length somewhat confused me. If I want a higher handlebar, would I want a longer or shorter head tube?

One last thing.....I think they should make bike sizes consistent. It should be either EVERYONE uses center-center OR everyone uses center-top.

I just measured my frame. C-C is 51cm. C-T comes to just about 54cm.

So if I were to answer this thread, would my answer be 51cm or 54cm?
keep dreaming, when manufacturers unify their measurements, the universe will implode. whatever it's labelled is it's size. Although top tube is more important than seat tube, so when in doubt, just say the top tube.

virtual or effective, since that's the important measurement.

I'm particularly concerned with (virtual) Top Tube length, if you have that info, please list it as well. Please comment the comfort level of the bike (if that was the intended purpose). How low is your handlebar when compared to your saddle? How did you achieve this? Riser stem? How long is your stem?

For the record, I'm 5'8" with a 31.25" cycling inseam (does this mean I have a short torso?). I'm looking to purchase my next bike/frame and want to see what size "everyone" in my height range is riding. I've been to the LBS recently and the bikes I test rode seem a little bit too stretched out for me.

Thanks,
Cadd

Because your question was a little different from the original question...

I thought you were specifically interested in saddle to bar drop...

Notice the most recent responses do not respond to your question...

And many of those who responded to the original thread may not be around...

Sorry to offend...

No one had posted about standard sizes xs, s, m and large. I'm 5'7", inseam is 29 1/2 inches and ride a small in Giant Compact Geometry. I beleive could have opted for a medium, but decided to go with small. My seat is a little high, dough.

Yep, that's pretty much it. I also prefer having a longer stem, a shorter wheelbase, and a bit more drop.

I'm 5'8", have a 31" inseam and ride a 54cm bike. I don't have a massive saddle to bar drop but I'm considering changing that since I've become more comfortable in the drops and want to use the hoods a bit lower than the current set up.

5' 8" with 30" inseam; rode a 52 for a while and now on 53. 54 works for me, too, but the 53 seems just right.

^^ My Tarmac has a bit of overlap with 43.5 sidi's, but it never really affects me. I know that my Fuji Team had nearly no noticeable overlap with my 43 Nike Poggios. Both bikes are 54 cm.

5'7.25" inseam just shy of 31". I ride a 54cm (54.8 TT, 110mm stem). I can ride a 52, but I like the feel of a 54 better, even though my saddle looks a bit low.

5'8" 56cm Cervelo Soloist Team.

When I was a kid, bikes were often sized by stand-over height. If you had an inch of clearance between you and the top tube, you were good-to-go. I guess the trend, especially with sloping top tubes and compact geometry, is to lean toward a smaller frame. I can ride a 54 but feel a little cramped and with a typical 100mm stem, my legs tend to strike the bars on an aggessive standing climb.

5' 7". 51.5cm is just right, I could probably ride a 50 if I weighed 130. Current bike is a 53 cm and it is just a tad on the large size for me.
