Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I do not recal the grade on this one but Fargo St. in L.A. is up there with the steepest of them. Some one else might chime in and know the % grade.

They used to hold an annual race to see who could ride up the fastest. I have not been keeping up with it so I do not know if it is still going on but it is a biyatch of a climb. First time I ever saw that hill I was with my dad in a '74 Vette and he decides to get a little air off the top Man that was a blast for me at 6yrs old.

You don't ride down that, you fall down it. And you probably don't stop til you get to the bottom!

The steepest grade in the city of Pittsburgh is Canton Street at 37%. It is cobblestone, not asphalt. It is part of the annual bike race, the Dirty Dozen.

Here's a hill in Brunswick MD (near me). While it's not as steep as that above pic, it's not too shabby.

Too bad there's no runoff at the bottom. Imagine it went straight for another flat mile at the bottom, you could fly down. You must destroy your brakes having to slow down for that 90 degree turn!

Ok, is 50% 45 degrees, or is 100% 45 degrees? I thought it was the latter, but looking at these pics has me confused.

Um, no. It's rise/run as a percentage. 45 Degrees is a 1/1 ratio, which is 100%.

No, 45 degrees is 100%. Vertical is infinite grade.

There's a road in Maui that is forty something percent. 4WD vehicles only.

Thanks for the confirmation.

For some reason, the hills still look steeper when you're riding up to them.

I think you'd need to swap out your 12-21 for a 12-23 for that one man.

The annual ride was fading until the PBS show "California's Gold" featured it a few years back. Now there are 30-40 riders attempting to climb it each year. I think there are timed competitions, tandem, and number of times climbed. I think the record is 25+ times in one day.

All the more reason to do it. After I summit, I'd stop, turn around and give em all the bird. [edit: After flipping them off, is there a dead end at the top or another way down? ]
