Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Around a month ago (6 weeks max) I sent my 12 year old OCLV frame back to Trek to repair a loose BB shell. 2 weeks later, Trek contacted me to tell me they'd rather replace the frame instead. Can't complain about that.

WELL, I've been waiting, patiently, for my new frame to arrive, and it's been torture.

FINALLY, my LBS called me a few minutes ago. My new frame is in, and it looks like it's the color I requested...

BUT, they close today before I can make it there, so it looks like I'll have to wait until tomorrow evening before I can make it in to pick up the frame.

UGH! It's friggin torture! I want to leave work NOW and go get it!!

Well since we have met I feel that I can say ROFLMAO and get away with it.

So which one did you get? Color?

Then do it! If I had a nickel for each time I really wanted to leave the office but shouldn't and ended up not going, I'd be a rich man. But the times I did break out, it just felt right. Go get your baby, hopefully it is what you selected, even though I hear the replacement program has a lot of leeway often. Do you still plan on selling it? Or are you going to build it up?

Do it. Say it's a family emergency: you have to go pick up a family member. Honestly, you're probably going to treat your new frame like a newborn for at least a little while, so it's not a *total* lie.

Well, I'm assuming that since I'm trading in a '93 OCLV, they'd swap it with a 5000 frame, which is the only bike that uses that same frame (non-Madone). I doubt I'd get a Madone as a replacement.

As far as the color goes, I asked for nude, or failing that, black (and I'd rather have a matte black than a gloss). The LBS said it says "natural" on the box. At the MS 150, I spoke to a guy who had an amazing looking 5000, and he said the color was "natural carbon". If I get that color, I'll probably blow a ventricle I'll be so happy. It's sweet!

GAH! I wanna leave, but I have too much work to do!

I dunno. Depends on 1) how it looks, and 2) if the geometry is any different than my '93. I kind of like the idea of having a new bike every 10 years, courtesy of Trek

I don't know how you haven't left yet!!! I was fitted for a custom bike last week from a lbs. Could be up to 10 weeks, (hoping for only 4)... but if I had a call that my bike was done, all they would see here at work is the back of my head...

Hey Cydewaze, I'm in Maryland.... which bike shop and what size. I'll be sure to post a picture of me riding it.

Quit, complaining you have that other beautiful bike you're riding in the mean time. I'm still working on getting my first bike so I can stop riding my mt. bike.

Not all of us! I personally don't want to see any nude pics of cydewaze! I would like to see the new frame though.

I'm about to get lunch. If the LBS is Revolution Cycles in G'Town, I'll go pick it up for you. That is, if it's a 54 cm frame already built up that I can ride home on the CCT.

You're obviously coming down with rickets or scurvy. August is rickets season, isn't it? You wouldn't want to infect your co-workers. Do everyone in the office a favor and get your bike... er... go home and rest.

I keep thinking to myself..."I should get a trek just for that warrenty!" Its one of those bikes that have been considered. But Its gonna be a year or two till I start thinking about it. Then I will choose....

I know it's all the rage to diss Trek bikes lately, but I have to say, I bought my original one for the way it rode, and I chose it over a Cannondale 2.8, a Kestrel, and a Merlin Ti. It really was the best feeling bike to me, and this is considering that it was fairly ill-fitting. I'm really looking forward to the new frame, because it'll be lighter (OCLV 120 vs my old OCLV 150, not to mention the newer fork is lighter than my old EMS fork) and they've made several other upgrades throughout the life of the OCLV frames. It's probably stiffer too.

I plan to test-ride a 5000 somewhere (assuming that's what my replacement frame is) to see if the fit is close to right. If it still feels ill-fitting, I may just sell it and buy something else. It'll be a tough call, because I really like the way these things ride.

Hate em or not, love em or not, I've heard many many positive things when it comes to frame replacement or warranty issues, I'm sure there are horror stories, but the majority of what I've heard has been positive. One thing I've heard more than a few times is that they upgrade you on parts and frames allot on replacement issues. People getting Madone frames when they had the older 5000 series frames, or getting Race lite wheels simply because they didn't have race wheels in stock at the moment. That's pretty sweet. Or in the case of this post, instead of a repair, just go with a brand new frame.

UPDATE:

I managed to make it to the bike shop on time (don't ask), and I had a bit of a disappointment.

First off, the frame was gloss black, not nude like I'd asked for. That I can live with. What I can't live with is that it's not a new frame. It's either new old stock, or someone else's frame that they repaired and gave to me. I'm thinking it's the latter, because it doesn't have a serial number engraved like the old frame did, but rather a sticker stuck to the bottom of the downtube of the bike.

This is disappointing because my old Trek frame never fit me properly, and this is just an identical version of that bike, except painted black. On top of this, the new bike is missing the cable guide, which I can get from the LBS, as well as the front derailleur braze on, which the LBS will have to contact Trek about. My old frame had both of these when it left.

So, there's no upgrade, no weight or stiffness advantage, and I had to pay for shipping. Plus, I can't re-use my old Chris King headset, because the replacement frame is just new enough to be 1-1/8".

Looks like it's for sale, as soon as I get the braze-on and cable guilde. Guess I'll move my 9-sp groupo to the Scattante for the rest of the season. :/
