So where would I stand in a race situation.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've been cycling for a year, and I am curious as to where I stand in my solo rides. My 40 mile rides take 2 hours, 50 are 2:30. So I guess its about a 20 mph pace, Id say my routes have a good mix of hills. When I rode at Pine Mountain Ga I could take the climbs up hines gap at about 12-15 mph. I believe the climb was a rated one in the 2003 or 04 tour de georgia.
I did one race last year, I think it was in November and was a metric century around Auburn Alabama.
I had a group to draft off of for the first 30 miles, but the last was pretty much by myself. Im curious as to what some of you cat 5 or 4 racers training paces are. As I am considering joining the cycling team at AU and just want to get an idea of how I would fair. Now I know there are many variables to this stuff, but I just want a general idea.....

Thanks....

You probably will get more responce in the Road Bike Racing sub-forum.

The answers will typically be:
No idea...racers are full of accelerations, so telling us your ave. mph on a route we have never seen do not mean much.

Here's a short answer before you go:

Racing is about the INTELLIGENT CONSERVATION of cycling energy, and its expenditure at the PROPER MOMENT. In other words, it ain't all about going fast by yourself. Smart wins more races.

Now, go to the other forum and see if you don't get the same answer.

Average speed is misleading in that you can average the same as the pros but it's where the sustained high power output for long periods of time that you lose out. That's where races are won.
