Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Mileage Increase

I've been invited to ride with some guys this weekend. They are planning on riding 48 miles. I've just recently gotten bike into biking and have only been doing about 10 miles a day for a few weeks. Do you think that the 48 miles would break me at this point?

48 miles is a big jump from only doing 10 miles. Have you been inreasing your miles every week? or just the 10 miles a day? I say give it a shot... let them know that you haven't been riding that long and if you get lost or cannot keep up, then turn around or find a shorter route. This way you can ride with the group as long as you can...

I've been riding the same ten miles a day, just a bit harder and faster each time. Your right, I think I'll just go for it and bail when I have to. Thanks.

Pay particular attention to what your body is telling you. A lot of symptoms of improper bike fit show up after a couple of hours of riding. If you've been limiting your rides to 10miles, then you may not be fully aware if your saddle is 5mm too low, or if your right cleat is 2*off. Like Sheldon Brown writes "Biking is NOT supposed to hurt."

Enjoy the ride, but be heads-up about what's going on. And don't forget to take along plenty of liquids.

Cheers.

I would go for it. I jumped from 20 miles to 70 miles in a day. If you are reasonably fit, you can endure more than most people think and still bounce back. No shame in limping home short of the goal either if you have exceeded your current distance record.

You can *probably* do it, but you'll probably be absolutely miserable at least some of the time. You'll also probably need ten grams of ibuprofen that evening, as your muscles will retaliate and let you know just how displeased they are with your decision.

My opinion? Try to find a shorter ride, or pick a distance to make a bail-no bail decision, perhaps at 12-15 miles in.

The training rule is to never increase more than 10 or 15 % at a time. BUT as a one time event, you should have no problem. I have done it many times. The only real problem I've had is being very tired and sore. Consume proteen after your ride and allow yourself more time to recover. Take a day or two off. You should be fine.
