I need an around-the-campus roadbike, under $250.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Howdy there,

Univiersity starts back in a week and I don't want to drag my mountain bike up to the campus. Because my mountain bike is expensive and would likely be stolen, I need to get my hands on a roadbike that I can keep in my dorm room and be able to travel around campus with.

I don't want to spend more than $250 (including tax and shipping) since I don't intend to race with it. I would get it from REI but all of the bikes there are expensive. I was looking at used bike stores around my area (atlanta-gwinnett, ga) and I did not find anything I liked.

I looked on eBay and found one particular seller that has a new roadbike in my price range. Check it out https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=7171746488 .

Considering the price, is this a good deal? Is there something I should be aware of ?

Where else could I look ? Should I consider older bikes on eBay?

Thanks,
Z.

PS: Please keep in mind that my campus is really hilly so I don't want to get a really heavy bike with like 10 gears or something.
PPS: I'm 5 foot 10 or so so I guess a medium / 56cm frame would work out well.

Here is what I would look for in this order
1. the bike fits
2. the bike fits my budget
3. the bike has a triple on the front (hills)
4. I won't freak out when it gets stolen
5. I can easily ride the bike with one hand full of books and a back pack and a coffee (that means no to a road bike)

I would think that garage sale would be my first choice or ebay.

You can't get a (new) road bike worth owning for less than $600. What you want is a hybrid, I suspect, not a roadie.

This bike will definetly be on the heavy side but I guess if I had to pick between this and WalMart I'd choose this one. I dunno, $235 seems like a pretty good deal but for some reason my spidey sense is tingling.

Even $250 sounds expensive for something that's only going to be used for puttering around campus. See if there's some kind of used bike depot in your town where you can pick up an old beater bike for less than $100.

where can i find a bike depot
i googled but the prices are outrageous !

I live about 1.5 miles away from my classes
so 3 miles * 5 days = 15 miles a week + grocery shopping, weekend study runs + cruises round town for execrise (it all adds up)

triple is three chain rings - like your mtb bike. A double would be too hard to ride in jeans in cold weather.

I guarantee no one in this forum knows. about 2 out of three people in this forum is going to tell you poor... but it's some weird hate for walmart that makes them say it. The other 1 out of 3 has the more honest answer of they don't know because they never really tried one out.

Too bad you don't want a MTB. I have a SS MTB I would sell you and it is just about in your budget.

you would have to take your hands off the brakes and you would have to ask someone a little less mechanicly ******** (then me) to figure out how to put those some where else...

but then again chill out... leave one hand on a brake if you want... how fast are you going on your walmart bike? 30 mph time trial?

haha i guess i would not go that fast though i would panic like a little schoolgirl going down a hill dodging full sized campus buses and sorority girls that never check to see if the street is clear

i guess i should go up to a walmart and see if they have these

for 150 bucks its a pretty damn good deal for a poor college student

hell my books are going to be twice that ... :|

Weird, the shifters actually look like they're mounted at the stem or on the steerer?

That's not a Dawes! Not even close. Never. 2006!? Looks more like 1972. The Walmart Bike looks a lot nicer.
