Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Upgrading bridgestone rb 1

I recently purchased a 1991 bridgestone rb 1, I suppose I'm partial to steel seeing as my only other road bike experience is on my fixie peugeot, in all honesty I'm primarily a mountain biker. My other bikes leave me completely unaccustomed to using downtube shifters, so I'm looking to upgrade my drivetrain to some sort of sti or ergo type shifting system. I realize this will probably result in me paying at least as much as I paid for my bike, so I'm looking for advice as to what I can keep from the original drivetrain and where to pick up the replacements cheaply. Right now the drivetrain is completely shimano 600 7speed, with a sunigo double up front.
I'd preferably like to upgrade to 105 quality or the campy equivalent. The wheelset, chain, and cassette obviously have to go if I want to upgrade to 9speed. Is it possible to salvage the deraillers by simply adjusting the high low stops? Also is it possible to save the original crankset, or are the chain rings spread to far apart when going from 7 to 9speed.
I'd deffinately appreciate any advice on this upgrade.

Just do it!

I have an RB-2 from around that era. My rear dropout spaceing was 130mm stock so I basically just changed out all of the components.

1. I've converted other bikes from 8-speed to 9-speed without worrying about chainring spaceing so I assume yours will work too.

2. The big bucks go for STI or Ergo shifters. Make sure that your shifters and cassette match. I'd be real careful about buying used STI's. Actually, I don't think that I'd buy used STI's unless they were cheap enough that I felt I could take the hit if they'd been already used up. I don't have any experience with Ergos.

3. If you go for STI's you'll probably have to get a new front derailleur to match the cable pull from the shifter.

Grouch did your rear wheel except cassettes, or was it a freewheel?
