Thanks to the good reviews and heads-up to Jenson USA in another thread, I just purchased a pair of Ultegra pedals. After a hard 50 mile training ride, they get an enthusiastic thumbs up! They're easy to click into and out of, they've got good float, and a nice big platform.
But one thing that concerned me is the softness of the cleat plastic. I notice they've got yellow wear indicators, but after one ride and hardly any walking, I've noticed they already seem pretty scuffed up on the bottom. I pretty much use this bike for training, racing, centuries, etc., so it's not like it's my commuter or grocery getter. What kind of wear can I expect on these things?

You can get Kool Covers for the cleats which will help with traction and slow down the wear.

I am getting the same pedals shipped tomorrow, so I would love to hear more on this as well. Glad you like the pedals.

The yellow cleats looked beat up but they've lasted me for two months so far.

Same here, they get scuffed up but they really don't wear as fast as you think they will.

I had about 3300 miles on my cleats after a year or so. The do get that "beat up" look, but I never had a problem. I didn't walk in them all that much, I think they are pretty durable none the less. One thing you might want to do is look for open sets of them at bike shops when your out shopping. I just picked up two open sets for the price of 1 set from my LBS. I have a few sets from buying my Dura-ace pedals and ultegra pedals for our tandem. So in total I have 4 complete spare sets so I'm set for a while on cleats.
They will last you a while, but always look for a deal because I think $20.00-$23.00 dollars is rediculous to pay for plastic...........

Ya, they seem to last a while, no problems here as of yet. They actually stay rather nice until you end up on rock of something that is slightly elevated then you scuff the black part...

wow, Im already replacing mine. (i think ive had them for about 5-6 months not sure) But I was riding recently and when my pedal would reach the upstroke it would click, like its loose. So Tommorow I am getting new cleats and hopefully that will work. Also after years of owning them there not supposed to be pretty (well its an exxageration) but I mean mine are pretty scuffed and dirty. Im worried that I am wearing them out too quickly.

Thats true but as I said earlier it sounded like and felt like every time I pedaled that in teh upstroke it would pull away from the pedal. Also the yellow bits in the back fo the cleat are pretty much worn to the black.

I remember reading the manual and it said that once the yellow peaces in the back were worn down to the black that they needed to be replaced.

Thanks for the reponses!
I looked online for Kool covers, but could only find them for Look and Speedplay cleats. As I look at them, it seems that they're designed to catch on the part closest to the shoe so as long as you keep them pretty clean they should continue to work okay.

I know Kool Covers exist for SPD-SLs because I recently bought a set. The ebay seller I got them from seem to be out and I haven't seen any other listings though.
proof of existence
EDIT: JensonUSA has PD6610s for $82.xx and probikekit.com has them for $70.xx.

My cleats are a year old this month and still look great. There is plenty of yellow left on them. Your supposed to replace them when the yellow is gone.
I don't walk much in mine--I make a point of that.
Plus I don't drag my shoes and such when stopping. I wait until I'm completely stopped before putting a foot down.
Over all they seem to hold up really well.

I replaced mine after approximately 3500 miles of riding. They were still in pretty fair condition but I felt like it was time for a new pair.
