Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano Dure-Ace or Ultegra Pedals

Does anyone have experience of these. I am looking to upgrade my old SPDs and I like the look of these. They look like they are very easy to clip into.

I would be greatful if people could let me know their experiences of these and what sort of price I should expect to pay.

They are great...Ultegra is heavier...they come with the cleat that provides float. If you do not want float, like Look, they make a non-float cleat as well. The cleats come with a walking/standing pad on the edges of the cleat triangle. You need the shoe to have the triangle holes to accept the cleat screws. Some who ride SPD have mountain/recreation shoes with the SPD recessed cleat. If you have this, you will also need to buy a shoe.

Unless you are racing or are a weight freak, for the money difference Ultegra will serve your purposes. They also make a composite pedal (PD R-540), it's black and looks like plastic (but it is not) that's around $90 but is the same platform as the Ultegra/Dura Ace.

I have the top end Nike Lance shoes so I assume they will do the job. Just couldnt afford to upgrade the pedals with the shoes at the time.

I have the ultegra pedals, and they've been great for me. I personally like having some float, and I've never clipped out accidentally on them - easy to clip in/out. They're not incredibly light, but for me, I couldn't justify an extra $100 for the dura-aces to shave off a little weight.

Ultegra here, I just upgraded from the 540 model and IMO there is not that great a difference other than a small amount of weight and more BLING Certainly I cannot fathom Duraace being worth the extra $$ unless you have a durace bike...then you must get them

Your Lance shoes will go perfect with these pedals!!

Weight isnt my main concern and anything is going to be an improvement weight wise on my current SPDs.

Good to here that people think they are a good pedals. Time to search the internet for the best price.

I have the DA' because I got a good deal on them a while back. I really like them. I am actually going to pick up a set of Ultegra for extra since I saw them for 83.00 somewhere.

I have 3 sets of Ultegra and love them. They can be purchased new off Ebay for $90 or less.

I have theses shoes too and the Ultegra SPD-SL 6600 (I think is the model) pedals. I just switched to this combo after cycling centuries on SPD's for years.

I like the bigger platform, they are easy to unclip and once I get used to them, I'm sure that I will be a little more graceful trying to clip in on an incline

Nice thing is that the Nilke Lance II Shoe does NOT need adapters to accept the cleats for the 6600 or 7800 pedals- they bolt right on.

Ultegra ~145 US
Dura-Ace ~225 US

DA not really worth it in my opinion. Well, maybe for Lance and the boys ....

Both prices are new. You can get them for a penny if you keep an eye out for the next 50 years. Good luck getting Shimano to do anything warranty-wise for you on anything you buy on eBay.

The SPD-SL's are great pedals... so easy to clip in and out... You have a choice of either no float or 6° of float. I like the 6° of float because it gives me just enough play to make it comfortable... The cleats will last a long time if you do not do too much walking on them. Get some KOOL Covers if you plan on doing alot of walking. Furthermore, the cleats are like $20... which is not too shabby...

I have 2 full DA10 bikes and both have ultegra pedals. IMO DA pedals are not really worth the money if you can not get them them at reasonable cost. BTW what is the first thing that is damaged when you bike falls over or is in a crash... the pedals. Plus for someone my weight... 225 30 extra grams means very little...

One day when I am cat 1/2 then maybe... now... little difference.

Here's better... I have 105s... they match the 105 black groupo I have and they cost me 60 bucks... Sure 30-40 gms heavier than Ultegras but I dont care... Love the pedal.

Besides the weight, Dura-Ace uses smoother bearings... however, I highly doubt that anyone would know while riding...

Ease of installation too...the DA's use an 8mm hex bolt whereas the Ultegras still insist on a pedal wrench.

I have both, the DA's are much faster . Really, there's not a noticable difference, you can pick up the Ultegra's on eBay for under $80 new. I really like the SPD-SL system, very easy to get in and out of and the wide/low platform is comfortable. I was using the old Ultegra SPD-R pedals before, and the newer system is way better.
