After a trip to the LBS to get a cable and some housing, I got the new frameset built up most of the way. I took it for an initial test-ride, and boy does it fly! I guess I got used to riding a 20lb bike with a $199 aluminum frame, so my first turn on this felt like I'd cut the rope on the anchor. I'm guessing the weight at around 17 even (without tool bag or water bottles. Only other thing missing is the bar tape (left off because I need to slap a few cable ferrules on).
Still need to install:
- bar tape
- ferrules
- computer
- front brake cable (the current one is around 2" too short)
I need to pull some spacers out because the bars are a bit too high. I'd also like to redo the housing so it's all one color and not 2, but that can wait. Just happy to be getting it together.

I'll wait up till I can get the American Classic in black. The creaky Ritchey junk post (it was all the LBS had in stock at the time) can stay on the spare bike.

wow, it's so classy with the single decal on the downtube--modern frames look like billboards (even my surly has to many [soon to be removed] decals).

Now that I know what's going on, it turns out I could have requested any color on the Project One solid colors list. Knowing that, I would have chosen Pearl Carbon, because that looks cool as hell in person. Sadly, the only color close to the violet is "purple metallic" which doesn't even look close, so I'm glad I didn't say, "I want purple again".
It was sad to see my old frame go, because I've had it so long, and have so many memories on it. It's been ridden in several states (MD, DC, VA, WVA, PA, NY) and it was my first high-end road bike. All I have left of it is the seat collar (might make a keychain out of that), the lower cable guide (now on this bike), the little disc that mounts under the drive side of the BB to prevent chain suck (also on this bike), and Chris King headset (1", so won't fit on this bike).
I'll miss the old bike, but I'm looking forward to logging some miles on the new one.

Hmmmm, what color bar tape should I use? I was going to just do black, but maybe white might be cool. Or grey. HMMM!

Black bartape. Keep it stealth and fast. You'll be a blur flying by.

My first road bike, a 1990 Trek 1000, was black with white bar tape. Looked great.
Definitely go with white or maybe yellow. Too much black would get a little monotonous.

R.I.P. She was a beauty You'll always have memories and hopefully lots of pictures.
That said, the new one should be really nice as well. I think the White tape would provide nice impact to the frame and look nice. However if it was me, I would just go with the sedate Black tape.

Welp, it'll be black for this weekend's ride, cause that's what I have in the toolbox. Might consider white when I replace that though.

Update: It's ready to ride.
Got the leftover stuff done, and the bars taped. I had black Cinelli cork lying around, so that's what I used. She deserves a new set of Contis, but the budget doesn't have room for em.
Viper mentioned memories of the old bike, so I thought I'd share a few.
Syracuse NY
At my aunt's for the Greek festival, I took off into the hills on the west side of town. Didn't know where I was going, but that didn't matter. Saw another rider in the distance, and chased him down. He was going to a group ride, and invited me to join him. They were a fun group, but I kept taking wrong turns, because I didn't know the route. At the end of the ride, I remember people inspecting my bike and playing with the STI levers, because they had just come out and were Dura-Ace only items.
Catoctin Mtn, MD
Riding with two friends and I decided to get cocky. While my friend was suffering up the steep grade, I pulled along side, asked him how he felt, then stood up to power away. I got two strokes in and my chain snapped. Luckily, I somehow stayed up. Lesson learned: Always use the correct replacement pins on Shimano chains, not the pin you used the chain tool on. I started using SRAM chains after that.
Horseshoe Curve, PA
Riding with the same friends, we pass someone on a hybrid. Shortly thereafter, the grade increases to such a point that I cannot climb it in my 39x23. So I start zig-zagging across the road. Taking a glance back, I notice the hybrid rider spinning his granny, and catching up! I resolve to have a coronary before letting him catch me.
Kensington, MD
Approaching 40mph on a slightly downhill left curve, I encounter a mixture of oil and antifreeze on the road. The resulting road rash isn't pretty, but the bike survives with little damage.
There are, of course, too many memories to list, but those are some of the funny ones. I'm looking forward to making new ones on the new bike. Woohoo!
Here's the finished product:

Unique Vintage Steel
I was going to vote for white bar tape, but if you had the black - then it only makes sense. Very stealthy
-- I may be biased to white bar tape - even if it does get dirty quick. Now if I could just figure out what was RED that I got on my old gloves and thus all over my white tape...
