Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Armadillo's

i live in a rural area, and i really don't feel like getting another flat. I've had a few this year that threatened me getting to work on time. i've heard about specialized armadillo tires, but can't seem to find any. anyone have a link?

You could also try some slime tubes. They seem to work pretty well for me on my training rides. I haven't had a flat since I put them on my training wheels.

Edit: I don't really know mch about the armadillo tires, but I am sure any LBS that carries Specialized bikes might carry the tires as well.

Try any bike shop that sells Specialized bikes. On line, www.specialized.com

How much efficiency loss over regular road tires with the Armadillo? I imagine there has to be some trade off.

don't know. do know they weigh more but i can live with that. i can eather use my tires now for racing or buy a new pair. i'm just sick of flats on solo rides 20 miles from home in the boonies.

That just sucks!!! Exactly why I hate flats. Thinking the trade off might be worth it.

i have put several thousand miles on armadillos. i put them on for a while and then take them off. if i'm commuting and can't be troubled by flats, they are great. in the winter, when flats are a horror show to change, they are great. the rest of the time they suck, IMO. they are a very rough ride. they are heavy and slow to spin up. they are not particularly grippy. i would much rather change the occasional flat and enjoy the ride as long as there isn't some other mitigating factor.

They are stiffer and heavier than racing tires. Definately only use them if you need the extra flat protection of if performance is not your primary concern (cactus thorns, commuting, etc.).
