Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

bike mechanic called me "brave"

I went down to the LBS(I found a new one and I like it very much) to get my wheels trued and my front hub "overhauled".

I was waiting for my wheels and I was talking to some other cool guy at the shop(they were just finishing up the second wheel when I came back). They give me my wheels back and the guy looks at the rear cassette and hes like, "Wow your brave with this 13". I was like, "hmm ok " Then he asked me if my bike was a tripple and I replied with double(I think because I only have two chain rings on the front?) And the guy was surprised again. He gave me my wheels and said good luck.

I am still confused. Is 13 on the rear cassette good or bad? He complemented on the campy hub too .

Well usual range is 12-(23-27), 11 for hard core racers or wannabe racers. With compact it's 11-...

I looked at the cassette and I counted 13 rings on the biggest ring on the back. Is this what they mean? The more the better right?

Err no wonder I am slow up the hills

Err....your biggest cog has 13 teeth, you mean?

And this bike has multiple gears?

Well, I'm confused.

the biggest cog on the back is 13 teeth. I basicly got the idea that more is better? The rear cog is tiny compared to all the bikes at the shop. I didn't realize this at first but now its kinda bad. I have a 9 speed bike and 2 in the front so thats like 18 gears total?

Are trying to suggest that your smallest cog at the back has 5 or less teeth. You've lost me too.

You probably have a 13-26. I don't know why that would be 'brave'. How many teeth does your smallest gear have?

No I believe I measured the largest cog on teh back and it was 13 teeth. I am confused myself lol.

I will go home and check out the cogs and tell you guys for sure but it diameter wise(the largest cog on the back) was small compared to everyone in the shop. I was talking to one of my friends and the way he explained it to me is that the smaller the cogs the faster you can go but harder for hills.

I'm still noobin around so forgive me I am still pretty sure that the largest cog in the back is 13 teeth

Okay, now let's be reasonable here. You KNOW his largest cog isn't 13 teeth unless he's riding a track bike. Only modern freehubs have allowed 12 and 11 teeth cogs to exist (outside of the old whacko stuff for hour bikes, internally-geared rear hubs, and whatnot). Do you think he actually has a corncob--nothing but 9 13-tooth cogs? Sheesh.

We need to see that bunny again. Otherwise, a photo of said cassette.
