Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What do you think of my silver saddle?

I bought a black Fizik Arione a few weeks back and I liked it so much I decided to get one that matched my bike. I picked up the '05 Team Barloworld silver w/blue stripe and was a little apprehensive about the silver color. After putting it on, I don’t think it looks too shabby.

looks pretty nice. Love your bike, by the way ! Do you to Tri or TT mostly? Just wondering, because it doesn't look like the seat would meet the UCI rules on the placement of the saddle when you have the seatpost in the forward position like you have it there, and mostly the rules for TTs(at least in my area) are the UCI rules. just curious.

I've only been riding a little over two months so I'm still building up my base miles and working on my speed. I haven't done any TT's or races as of yet, my first TT/race is Oct. 1st. A 65 mile race with an 18 mile TT in the middle.

I'm not good enough to be concerned with UCI rules yet. But one day maybe. I’m surprised they would have a rule about saddle position. Dose a forward seat position give you that much of an advantage?

I'm still playing around with seat positions. Right now I have the seat as far forward as it will go. I wanted to see if there would be any comfort issues on my 30-40 mile rides. So far, I like the forward seat position, it seems gives me more leverage and power without sacrificing comfort.

from what i've read, it seems that the front tip of the saddle has to be minimum 5cm back from the bottom bracket for both TTs and road races. If the race in october is run by UCI rules, you'll probably have to become concerned with uci rules before you start, to make sure your(very freakin' sweet ) ride complies with the rules

also, as a side note, if you end up having to race with the seatpost flipped back to the normal setback position, and most likely with sucha long saddle like the arione, you will be in a much different position than the one you are training in, and i think you would most likely find such a position change to be a major factor in your performance on race day. just somthing to keep in mind. i'm sure some of the much more seasoned racers/time trialists on the board could add somthing to this discussion.

I appreciate the info. I don't think the race I'll be doing is any way sanctioned by the any serious race organizations. It's more of a "fun ride" that anyone can participate in; however I think there will be some stiff competition. The average speed of some of TT riders last year was close to 30 mph. That's too bad they scheduled both rides on the same date. This will be my first official ride/race. I just got into biking a few months ago.

Not too soft (my last saddle felt like a rock)
Not too hard (I've tried gel saddles, too soft)
Narrow nose (Leaves room for my thighs)
Extra over all length (I find I use every inch of the saddle)
