Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best Body Positioning for Hills?

I was just wondering about the best body positioning for riding down hills with some control and lots of speed. I live in the North Cascades, so all of my riding is in the hills, and lots of time, they are slippery and/or have gravel scattered across the road.

I generally get very low and have my butt as far back on the saddle as possible.

I even tried putting my hands close together on the flat part, and put my nose pretty much right on the stem, like I saw on le tour. Two things though: 1, I made sure there weren't any cars around (for safety reasons, and I didn't want to be seen trying it ) and 2, it got real scary real fast. I wasn't antcipating it being that much different to steer with my hands that close to the stem.

if the roads you're on have some loose gravel, I wouldn't dare bomb down with my hands anywhere but the drops. Tuck your elbows and knees in and bring your upper body down close to the top tube. Riding with your hands near the stem won't let you steer well if you gotta avoid gravel, or go around turns.

get flared drops, Im scared ****less of mad downhill (hey a little speed doesnt killanyone?) but I get super control with them, now if your a fan of speed. You wat to get yourself as aerodynamic as possible. you want to tuck your self in close together. I would say be on the drops so you are close to the brakes. Wait if your going fast enough then breaks wont work because theyll kill you. well try out different things and see how it goes. Peace going for a ride!

...I also saw Rasmussen's face plant on leTour. You don't want to do this on bumpy roads.
Get your butt back and in the air, pinch the seat sides with your thighs and lower your head as much as possible while facing forward -DO NOT face down, this is the #1 mistake of serious crash victims. Hands at mid top bar.

Go all-out-pro; do the hands near the stem thing, but first move forward and sit on the top tube, then slide back so your but is under the saddle. Crazy speed. Don't try it for the first time at really fast or really slow speeds.

oh no, sitting on the top tube is a recipe for disaster.

I had a crazy friend who used to do the "superman", you take your feet off the pedals, rest your tightened stomach on the seat and then straighten out you legs to the back, stupid move, but really funny.
