Who puts more miles on their bike then on their vehicle?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who puts more miles on their bike then on their vehicle?

My goal each week is to try to put more miles on my Fuji than my 'yota. I don't bike to work but try to get in 15-20 daily then 40-60 on weekends (or 115-160/week). My daily car commute is 18 miles round trip and then weekend trips (church, grocercies, beach, etc) are about 50 miles on average. So far, I've beat my vehicle miles only once in the past 3 weeks due lack of biking due to rain or oversleeping the 6am ride.
Anybody else have this goal?

I have done it a few weeks this summer. When my children switch day care (to one much closer to me) in a few weeks, that will get even better as I'll be taking them there via bike (trailer) instead of car as I'm currently doing.

I don't have it as a hard-and-fast goal, but I know it's going to happen, and I like saying "I put more miles on my bike than on my car this week", people seem to dig that especially when gas is nearing $3.00/gal.

Yup I have the same exact goal for 2005. More miles on my bikes than on my VW. I commute so day to day it is easy but for instance last Sunday I drove 145 miles on way to do a 64 mile ride in Lancaster so the car caught up a bit there. There have also been 2 weeks when my wife drove my car to work but I am still ahead with the bikes. Current miles for the year is roughly 2600 for the bikes (not including 240 "miles" of trainer time in the winter) and roughly 2000 for the VW.

So far so good.

Except for the occassional trip out to the coast or up to Seattle, I always put more miles on my bike than on my car.

I'm proud to say that since I got my bike I have put more than 500 miles on the bike and only 35 on the car.

My 2001 bike just turned over 17,000 miles this month.

My 2003 car just turned over 18,000 miles this month.

I doubt if the bike can catch up, but it's an interesting thought!

That is my personal vehicle that I primarily drive to and from work and to the fly shop etc. I have only driven to work, I think 6 times since I got my bike. All 6 times it was because of rain. I've even started riding to the store for small stuff. Put the back pack on and head out.

From June to June, I put just over 6,000 miles on my assorted bikes. I bought a car for temporary use in late November and sold it again in June, primarily because I couldn't figure out how to get a snowboard back and forth from my house to the mountain on a bike in the winter weather; during that time, I put about 2,600 miles on it, mostly driving from Steamboat to Denver and back once or twice a month to get people at the airport.

So yeah, I guess I put more miles on my bike last year. Will again this year, too, since I no longer even own a car

I figure I've got about as much money invested in bike stuff as I paid for the car I recently sold... though not as much money as I got for the car when I sold it!

Drove to work twice this week, rode three times. When I ride, sometimes my wife will pick me up and haul me home in the evenings - it's too damn hot still in the afternoon 100+. But I still consider that better than driving two vehicles.

Here's my tally for the week.

bike = 56 miles
car = 48 miles

My catalyst is these g'd gas prices. I can't stand pumping $45 into my car all the time. Plus I wanna get fit.

If by "bike" you mean "bikes", I do. I do a steady 90 -100 miles per week (average over the year) on a combination of my commuting and road bikes. I drive my car rarely, but every two or three weeks, I drive it to the country, which is an automatic 240-mile trip. So that keeps it interesting. If you exclude the weekend getaways, it's no contest, bikes win hands down. In response to the second question, I have to combine two bike to get more than the cost of the car. One comes close, though - and it's not a crazy expensive bike, just a cheap car!

I think I spend just as much riding to work and recreation riding(tubes tires extra food) as I'm saving but I feel a whole lot better about spending it on my health than the gas guzzler

Well my daily commute is 18 miles round trip five days a week. Then a good 25 miles or so on the weekend. 120 or so miles a week in the car, and I ride about 230 miles a week on the bike. So I suppose I can say I put more miles on the bike .

I've got more miles on my bike than my car this year...

but only if you take out the miles used to travel to races. Too bad you can't ride to races (4-6 hours by car)

We road trip in the car so much that this is impossible for me unless I quit work and go pro. We put 7k miles on our car a couple of years ago in one three week trip. My annual riding goal this year is 5k and while I'm ahead of that, I'm not gonna get up to 20k miles on the bike.

I'd be more interested in comparing miles in the car to miles on the bike for destination activities (e.g. commuting, errands, touring, etc). This way you're looking at miles that didn't have to put on the car thanks to cycling. When these bike miles exceed your car miles, that's really cool. Mine do quite easily, but then that's aided a bit because we mostly use my wife's car on the weekends, trips to the mountains etc.

If you weren't doing your 50 mile ride on the weekend, would you have driven it instead?

Not owning a car it is rather easy for me. Typically it's about 50 miles of fixed bumming around/commuting with a few 40 milers thrown in on the ol' geary.
